What is a .run domain?

The .run domain is short, sharp, and built for the running community. Parkrun organisers, marathon events, running clubs, and specialist running shops all benefit from a three-letter extension that matches the energy of the sport. It also works beyond athletics for businesses using "run" in the operational sense, like a software deployment or event series.

Who should register .run?

Running clubs, parkrun groups, marathon organisers, running shoe retailers, and race timing services.

Why choose .run?

Why .run works as a verb, not a label

Almost every extension released in the 2013 application round is a noun. .run is one of the few that is also a verb, and that changes what the second level has to do. Put an ordinary name in front and you get a label. Put the right word in front and the whole address becomes an instruction: something.run reads as a thing you do rather than a place you visit. Software teams spotted that early, which is why the extension turns up on build tools, job runners and deployment dashboards as well as on race entry pages.

It went live in 2015 under one of the single-purpose applicant companies of the period, Snow Park, LLC, and moved to Binky Moon, LLC in the March 2018 transfer that swept up 196 of those extensions at once. The contract with ICANN is the plain base agreement. No sporting body sponsors it, nobody checks whether you run, and there is no charter to fall foul of.

The catch is the same thing as the strength. A verb only works with the right partner word, and a poor pairing cannot be fixed later. A surname, a town or a limited company name in front of .run tends to read as a typing error rather than a phrase, and you will spend the life of the domain explaining it. Say the full address out loud, twice, before you pay for it.

One caution matters here more than on most extensions. Mass-participation running brands are trademarked, and every generic extension is covered by ICANN's dispute procedures, so an address built on somebody else's event name can be taken off you after you have promoted it. Build on a name you own.

The honest answer

Is .run the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.run works well if

  • The word in front makes a phrase. Something like "sunrise.run" or a place name lands; "smithandsonsltd.run" does not.
  • You organise races or a club and want one address that fits on a bib, a banner, a results page and a text message.
  • You are naming software that executes something: a job runner, a build service, a scheduled task dashboard, a test harness.
  • At £21.99 a year it is one of the cheaper sector extensions here, so the cost of trying an idea on it is small.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your business name does not make a phrase with "run". Three letters after the dot cannot rescue an address that reads oddly.
  • You need the word "running" rather than "run". Shops, coaching businesses and sports physios usually do, and .run cannot supply it.
  • Your entries come from local search. A .co.uk gives Google a UK signal that .run does not, and most race fields are filled locally.

Running a UK club or event that fills from local search? A .co.uk costs less than half this and carries a UK signal. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.run vs .fit: which should you register?

Both extensions chase the same broad market and they behave differently in a sentence. A .fit sits behind a brand and describes a state, so a studio or coaching business can use it without changing how the name reads. A .run turns the name into an action, which is stronger when it works and worse when it does not.

The other difference is scope. Fitness is a sector; running is one sport inside it. If your business teaches, treats or sells across more than running, a .fit ages better. If everything you do is the one discipline, .run says it in three letters and costs £7 a year less.

.run domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .run domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

No, and the second audience is bigger than most buyers expect. Because run is a verb, the extension gets used by software teams for anything that executes: build pipelines, job schedulers, test runners and deployment dashboards. Nothing in the registry agreement points it either way. The test is grammatical rather than sectoral, so if your name plus .run reads as a phrase somebody could repeat down the phone, it works.

You can register it, and you may well lose it. Registration is first come, first served with no trademark check at the point of sale, but every generic extension is covered by ICANN dispute procedures, and a domain trading on somebody else's event brand is exactly what those procedures exist for. Losing the address after you have printed entry forms costs far more than the domain did. Build on a name you own.

A .run renews at the same price it registers for, £21.99 a year here, and a transfer in costs the same and adds a year to the registration. Watch for premium names: the registry can place particular strings in a higher price band, and where it does, that price applies to renewals as well as to the first year. If the name you want comes back at an unusual figure, that is why, and it will not drop later.

It is neutral rather than harmful, but neutral is a loss if your audience is local. Google treats .run as a generic extension, so it carries no country signal, while a .co.uk tells Google you are aimed at the UK before anything on the page does. For a club or race that fills from the surrounding counties, that difference is real. For a piece of software with users worldwide, it makes no odds at all.
