The .dance verb trick, and where it stops working

Dance is a verb, and that is what makes .dance more interesting than most keyword extensions. Read as a sentence, an address like lets.dance or shall-we.dance does something no ordinary domain can, and the effect is memorable on a poster, a flyer or the back of a class timetable. The catch arrives the moment somebody has to say it out loud. Verb addresses collapse over the phone, on the radio and in a voicemail, because the listener has no way to know where the dot goes.

So the honest guidance splits by use. If the domain will mostly be seen, printed or scanned from a QR code, the verb trick is worth having. If it will mostly be spoken, put your school name in front of the dot and let the extension describe the sector instead of finishing the sentence.

The registry has moved once. IANA delegated .dance on 9 January 2014 to United TLD Holdco Ltd., and recorded its transfer to Dog Beach, LLC on 2 June 2021; Dog Beach is listed at Identity Digital's address in Bellevue. The ICANN agreement, signed on 24 October 2013, is Base and Non-Sponsored, so no examining board, syllabus body or teaching qualification is checked at the point of order. There is no .dancing in the root zone, so the shortlist is smaller than it looks.

It is also among the cheaper keyword extensions on this site, at roughly two and a half times a .co.uk, which makes it a reasonable second address to hold alongside a main one rather than an either-or decision.

The honest answer

Is .dance the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.dance works well if

  • The address is mainly going to be read rather than said: posters in the studio window, class timetables, flyers, a QR code on a leaflet.
  • You want the verb effect, where the whole address reads as an instruction, and you have a name in front of the dot that makes it work.
  • You run performance or choreography work rather than local classes, so a national or international audience matters more than a UK search signal.
  • Your school name is long and the .co.uk version needs an abbreviation nobody remembers, where one word in front of .dance stays intact.

Look elsewhere if

  • Parents find local classes by searching a town name. Google gives a .co.uk a UK signal and gives this none, at under half the price.
  • A verb address falls apart on the phone. If bookings come by voice, expect to spell the whole thing every single time.
  • It is easily heard as .dancing or .dancer, neither of which is delegated, so a caller guessing at the address reaches nothing rather than you.

Running weekly classes for families in one town? A .co.uk will do more for that search and cost less than half. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.dance vs .studio: which should you register?

Both are run by Dog Beach, LLC, so this is not a registry decision. It is about which half of the business name you want the extension to carry, and .studio costs about a third more.

.dance names the art form. It works for schools, companies, choreographers and events, and it holds up when you teach ballet on Tuesday and street on Thursday. .studio names the place, which suits a venue with a floor, mirrors and a hire rate, and stretches to recording, photography or yoga if the room ever does something else.

Most dance schools trade as some version of "X Dance Studio", which means either extension can absorb one of those words and shorten the address. If the room is the asset and you hire it out, .studio earns its place. If the teaching is the asset, take .dance.

FAQ

.dance domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .dance domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

No. Nothing is checked. The ICANN agreement behind .dance is Base and Non-Sponsored, so no examining board, syllabus body or teaching association vets registrations, and there is no requirement to hold a qualification, an insurance policy or a DBS check to own the domain. All of those matter enormously to the parents booking your classes, which is why they belong on the page, prominently, rather than being implied by the address.

They are good on paper and awkward on the phone. An address that reads as a sentence is memorable in print, on a poster or under a QR code, and it lets a school with a long name sidestep the whole problem. What it cannot survive is being spoken, because a listener has no way of hearing where the dot sits. If more than a third of your bookings start with a phone call, put the school name in front of the dot instead.

Neither exists. IANA's list of delegated extensions has .dance and no variants, so someone guessing at the spelling of your address reaches nothing rather than a competitor. That is a small mercy, but it also means the shortlist is shorter than people expect. The realistic alternatives are .studio, .school, .co.uk and .com, and each one shifts what the address is claiming: the art form, the room, the institution or nothing in particular.

Not through search. Google treats keyword extensions as ordinary generic extensions with no ranking benefit, and parents looking for classes search a town name plus an age group, which is local search territory. Your Google Business Profile, your timetable page and your reviews do that work. Where .dance helps is recall: it is short enough to remember off a poster in the studio window, which is how a surprising share of local class enquiries actually start.
