Which bike: what .bike means to a British reader
Ask a British reader what a bike is and roughly half of them will picture a motorcycle. That ambiguity is the first thing to weigh on .bike, and it cuts both ways: a motorcycle dealer can use it as comfortably as a bicycle shop, but neither can rely on the extension alone to say which they are. The word in front of the dot has to carry that. There is no .bicycle in the root zone to fall back on, though .motorcycles does exist for anyone who needs the distinction spelled out.
The history is worth a line because it is unusually early. The new gTLD programme made its first four delegations on 21 October 2013. .bike was in the root zone on 8 November 2013, less than three weeks later, against an ICANN agreement signed on 27 August 2013. It went in as Grand Hollow, LLC and moved to Binky Moon in the bulk transfer recorded on 23 March 2018. That agreement is Base and Non-Sponsored, so no club, federation or trade body vets who registers.
Where it works best is the part of cycling that is not a shop. Clubs, sportives, charity rides, coaching businesses and touring companies all struggle to find a .co.uk that is not four words long, and a single strong word in front of .bike solves that in a way that reads well on a jersey and on a start sheet. Shops are a harder call, because shop trade is local and local is exactly where a .co.uk earns its keep.
Is .bike the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.bike works well if
- You run a club, a sportive or a charity ride and want an address short enough to print on a jersey and read off a start sheet.
- You coach, guide or run tours, where the audience is national rather than one town and a keyword address does more than a local one.
- Your brand is one strong word and the .co.uk version needs three, so the extension buys back the characters the name deserves.
- You sell a product rather than a service, for example frames, lights or components, and want the category in the address without repeating it in the name.
Look elsewhere if
- You are a bike shop with a postcode. Google uses most country-code extensions to geotarget and a .co.uk costs about a third as much, which is hard to argue with for local trade.
- Half your callers will hear bike and think motorcycle, so if the two markets could plausibly overlap for your business, expect to clarify constantly.
- It is a keyword extension, and keywords in an extension give no ranking advantage at all, so nobody should be selling you this as an SEO decision.
One shop, one town, walk-in trade? Put the money into a .co.uk and your Google Business Profile instead. See .co.uk pricing.
.bike vs .co.uk: which should you register?
For a British cycling business this decision usually comes down to whether the customers are local or national, and the two extensions are honest about which they serve.
.co.uk is the cheapest option on this site and, by Google's own account, most country-code extensions are used to geotarget, so it tells the search engine your pages are aimed at Britain. For a shop, a workshop or a fitting studio taking trade from a twenty mile radius, that is the whole argument. .bike carries no geography and no ranking benefit, but it carries meaning, and meaning is what a club, a tour operator or a product brand actually needs from an address.
Plenty of businesses buy both, put the .co.uk on the van and the .bike on the jersey, and point them at the same site. That costs a few pounds a year and removes the argument entirely.

.bike domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .bike domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyBoth, and the registry takes no view. There is no eligibility rule attached to the extension and no requirement to be in the cycling trade, so motorcycle dealers, e-bike brands, bicycle shops and touring companies all hold .bike addresses. British usage really is split between the two meanings, so if your market could be confused with the other one, put the distinction in the name rather than relying on the extension. .motorcycles exists if the difference has to be unmissable.
It is among the earliest. The new gTLD programme delegated its first four extensions on 21 October 2013, and IANA recorded .bike in the root zone on 8 November 2013, under an ICANN registry agreement signed that August. Practically, that means it has a longer track record than most keyword extensions, it is carried by every mainstream registrar, and it has been through a registry transfer already, to Binky Moon in March 2018, without disruption to holders.
No. Google has stated since 2015 that keywords in a top-level domain give no advantage or disadvantage in search, and shop searches are local anyway, which puts the weight on your Google Business Profile, reviews, opening hours and proximity to the person searching. A .bike address is worth having for how it reads on a jersey, a van or a business card. Treat it as branding, and spend the SEO budget on the profile and the location pages.
Yes, with nothing to prove. There is no club affiliation test, no federation membership requirement and no governing body sign-off; the ICANN agreement is Base and Non-Sponsored. Clubs are one of the better fits for the extension, because club names are long, the obvious .co.uk went years ago, and a short address that people can read off a start sheet or a club kit is worth more to a club than a geographic search signal it will never use.
