The longer answer

The spelling problem with a .restaurant address

Ten letters, with an "au" in the middle that people mistype and a final "t" that disappears when they are typing what they heard rather than what they read. Before you commit to this extension, say the whole address out loud to somebody who has not seen it written down, and watch what they put in the address bar. That five-second test has changed a few minds.

Now the other side, because the length is only a cost when someone is typing. Most restaurant traffic never touches a keyboard. It arrives from a Google listing, a link in an Instagram bio, a QR code on a table, a booking platform or a review site. If your address mostly lives inside a hyperlink, ten letters cost you nothing at all and the word after the dot does useful work: it removes the ambiguity that a name alone leaves.

What the extension does not do is affect bookings or local visibility. Google's required properties for local business structured data are the name and the address, and it documents a separate menu property for the fully qualified URL of your menu. None of it reads the extension. Your covers come from your Google Business Profile, your photographs and your reviews.

Binky Moon, part of Identity Digital, runs it under that group's Acceptable Use Policy and reserved names practice, delegated on 31 July 2014. Fine dining and destination restaurants, where people arrive by link and search by name, get the most from a .restaurant domain. A neighbourhood bistro is better served by the .co.uk.

The honest answer

Is .restaurant the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.restaurant works well if

  • Almost nobody types your address, because bookings arrive through links, QR codes and a reservation platform, so the length costs you nothing.
  • You are a destination restaurant people search for by name, and the extension removes any doubt about which result is yours.
  • Your name on its own is ambiguous, and adding the word after the dot is cleaner than bolting it onto the front of a .co.uk.
  • You are opening a second site and want an address family that is not tied to the town the first one is in.

Look elsewhere if

  • Ten letters with an au in the middle. If your customers ring up and get told the address over the phone, you will spend years spelling it out.
  • It is among the dearer food extensions, on top of the .co.uk you will keep anyway for email and for habitual typers.
  • A neighbourhood restaurant gets its custom from the local pack, and that is driven by your Google Business Profile rather than by anything after the dot.

Neighbourhood restaurant? Spend the money on the .co.uk and on keeping your Google Business Profile accurate. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.restaurant vs .menu: which should you register?

These two are often bought together, and they should be doing different jobs. One is the address of the business. The other is a short pointer to a single page.

.restaurant is a main address. It describes the whole operation, it survives a change of chef and a change of cuisine, and it works on a website, an email address and a booking confirmation. .menu is a redirect. Four characters is short enough for a table card and a QR code, and its right destination is the menu page on your existing site rather than a second site of its own.

The mistake to avoid is treating .menu as a cheaper .restaurant. Build the business on one of them and use the other as a shortcut into it, and you get both benefits without dividing your site between two domains.

.restaurant domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .restaurant domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

It is long, and whether that matters depends on how people reach you. Ten letters with an "au" in the middle is a real risk if customers type your address after hearing it on the phone. It is close to irrelevant if your traffic arrives through Google, a QR code, a booking platform or a link in a social bio, which is where most restaurant traffic comes from. Test it before you buy: say the full address to someone and watch them type it.

Not by itself. Bookings come from your Google Business Profile, your photographs, your reviews and whichever reservation system you use, and none of those consider the extension. Google's required properties for local business structured data are the business name and the address. Where the extension helps is recognition: a diner scanning a page of search results sees immediately which entry is a restaurant rather than a review aggregator or a listings site, and that can be worth a click.

Yes. There is no food business registration to produce, no hygiene rating threshold and no requirement to operate a restaurant. Identity Digital lists it in its portfolio with no eligibility note against it, so a supplier, a critic, a design agency or a restaurant group can all register one. Its Acceptable Use Policy applies, and the registry reserves the right to deny, suspend, cancel, redirect or transfer a registration that breaches it or breaches the law.

Take .restaurant if you want an address for the business and .menu if you want a short pointer to one page. They answer different questions and buying the second as a cheap version of the first is how restaurants end up with a menu sitting on a domain that has none of their history. If you want both, build the site on one and redirect the other into it, so all your links and rankings accumulate in one place.
