The longer answer

Why a .menu domain can weaken your main site

Start with the mistake, because it is the common one. If yourrestaurant.co.uk is the website and yourrestaurant.menu holds the menu, you now run two sites instead of one. Every link, mention and share the menu earns builds authority on a domain that has none of your history, and the page people search for by name, your menu, sits on the weaker of the two. Search engines have no way to credit one for the other.

There is a version of this that works, and it is worth the money. Google's structured data documentation for a local business includes a menu property whose value is the fully qualified URL of the menu. That URL can be anything you like, so a four-character address is easy to print on a table card, to encode in a QR code, to chalk on a board and to say down the phone. Point it at the menu page on your main site with a redirect, and you get the short address without splitting anything.

This is also the odd one out in the food extensions. It is not an Identity Digital property. IANA records Dot Menu Registry LLC of Beverly Hills as the sponsoring organisation, delegated on 13 November 2013, running its own WHOIS at whois.nic.menu and its own RDAP service. A small independent registry is not a problem in itself, but it does mean the policies, the reserved names and the pricing follow their own course rather than a large portfolio's.

Buy it as the short address that redirects. Do not buy it as the place your menu lives.

The honest answer

Is .menu the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.menu works well if

  • You want a short address for table cards and QR codes that a customer can read at a glance and type on a phone without errors.
  • You already run a .co.uk and want a scanned code to land straight on the menu page rather than the homepage, saving a tap.
  • Your business name is long, and the address you say on the phone needs to be shorter than the one on your letterhead.
  • You publish local business structured data and want a memorable URL for the menu property Google documents.

Look elsewhere if

  • You are planning to build the menu as a separate website. That divides your site in two and leaves the most-searched page on the domain with no history.
  • The word only fits food. Move into catering, retail or events and the address stops describing what you do.
  • It is an extra annual bill on top of the .co.uk you will still need, so treat it as a second domain rather than a cheaper first one.

Only buying one domain? Make it the .co.uk and put the menu at yoursite.co.uk/menu/, where it feeds the same site. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.menu vs .restaurant: which should you register?

These two answer different questions. One names a page. The other names a business. Confusing them is how restaurants end up with a menu that outranks their own homepage on a domain they barely maintain.

Use .restaurant as a main address when you want the extension to describe the whole operation and you accept the ten letters that come with it. Use .menu as a redirect when the job is to be short, sayable and scannable, and the destination is a page on a site you already own.

They also come from different places. .restaurant sits in Identity Digital's portfolio with that group's shared policies; .menu is run by an independent registry with its own. That rarely matters day to day, but it is worth knowing when you are comparing renewal prices years from now.

A page on your website, with the .menu domain redirecting to it. Putting the menu on its own domain splits your site: links and mentions the menu attracts build authority somewhere your main site cannot use, and the page most people search for ends up on the domain with the least history behind it. Redirecting gives you the short address for print and QR codes while keeping every visit, every link and every bit of ranking value on one site.

Yes. Google's structured data documentation for local businesses includes a menu property, and it describes the value as the fully qualified URL of the menu. That gives a .menu address a documented job rather than a decorative one. The required properties for that markup are the business name and its address, so the domain is not what makes you eligible for anything. It is simply a tidy, memorable value to put in a field Google already reads.

Dot Menu Registry LLC, recorded by IANA at an address in Beverly Hills, California, with the extension delegated on 13 November 2013. It runs its own WHOIS server at whois.nic.menu and its own RDAP service. That makes it unusual among food extensions, most of which sit inside Identity Digital's much larger portfolio and share one set of policies. A smaller registry is not a risk in itself, but its pricing and policy decisions are its own.

It is one of the better uses for it, because a four-character extension keeps the encoded URL short and a short URL makes a less dense, more forgiving QR code. It also gives the diner something readable underneath the code for anyone whose camera will not focus. Point the domain at the menu page rather than the homepage so the scan lands where the customer expects, and keep that page fast, because it is being loaded on a phone with one bar of signal.
