What is a .surf domain?
The .surf domain rides the line between sport and lifestyle. Surf schools, board shapers, wetsuit brands, and surf forecast sites all fit naturally under this extension. The UK surf scene, centred around Cornwall, Devon, and Pembrokeshire, has grown considerably, and .surf gives businesses in coastal communities a domain that matches their identity.

Two meanings of surf, and which one sells
Surf points at the sea and at the web, and this extension has been bought for both. Board shapers, surf schools and forecast sites use the literal meaning. The other reading, surfing the internet, is dated enough now that it turns up mostly in older projects rather than new ones. If you are buying today, assume readers will take the ocean meaning and write your copy accordingly.
Registry Services LLC, trading as GoDaddy Registry, operates it, and its published answer on eligibility is that anyone can register a .surf worldwide on a first-come, first-served basis. It was delegated in March 2014.
Britain has a real surf economy, concentrated in Cornwall, north Devon, Pembrokeshire and the Gower, and for a school or a shop in one of those places the extension reads as belonging rather than borrowing. The trade-off is that it is generic, so it does nothing at all for a Google search made from Newquay, where a .co.uk with the town in it does a great deal. Our usual steer for a local business is to keep the .co.uk as the working address and use the .surf for the brand.
Is .surf the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.surf works well if
- You run a surf school, a hire shop or a board brand in a coastal town and want the address to say so in four letters.
- Your name is gone on both .co.uk and .com, and yourbrand.surf gets you something short without resorting to hyphens.
- You publish forecasts, reports or video for surfers, where an audience of enthusiasts will recognise the extension instantly.
Look elsewhere if
- Your customers find you by searching a town plus surf lessons. A .co.uk with the town in the name will do considerably more of that work.
- It costs about three times a .co.uk each year, which is heavy for a seasonal business in a small coastal market.
- Surf still reads as internet slang to plenty of older customers, so the address can land as a technology brand rather than a beach one.
Teaching lessons to people who found you by searching your town? A .co.uk earns its keep in local search. See .co.uk pricing.
.surf vs .co.uk: which should you register?
For a British surf business these two are not really rivals, because they are good at different things. A .co.uk is cheap, familiar, and reads to Google as a UK site, which is what decides whether you appear for someone searching surf lessons in Croyde. A .surf is memorable and on-brand, and does nothing for that search at all.
So the sensible arrangement is both, with the .co.uk as the address on your booking system, your invoices and your Google Business Profile, and the .surf as the one on the T-shirts and the van, redirecting to the same site. If the budget only stretches to one and you sell locally, the .co.uk is the one that pays for itself.
.surf domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .surf domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyAnyone in the world can, first come first served, and that is the registry's own published answer. No surf club membership, no coastal address, no evidence of any connection to the sport. Registration includes free DNS management, email forwarding and one free 10GB mailbox with us, so a small school can run bookings@yourschool.surf without paying for a separate mail service.
It is neutral, which for a local business is a quiet disadvantage. Google reads .surf as a generic extension with no country attached, so it carries neither a boost nor a penalty. A .co.uk does carry a UK signal, and for a surf school whose customers are all searching from Britain that signal is worth more than a clever address. Keywords in the extension are not a ranking factor and should not be treated as one.
As a second address, often yes. As your only address, usually not. Almost all of your bookings will come from people searching a beach or a town alongside surf lessons, and a .co.uk with that town in the name competes for those searches far better. Where .surf pays off is brand recall: it looks right on a board bag and a hoodie, and returning customers remember it. Register both if you can.
