What .repair claims, and what UK law recognises
There is a legal category in this country called a professional repairer, and .repair is not how you join it. The Ecodesign for Energy-Related Products and Energy Information Regulations 2021 define the term and give it teeth: under Schedule 3, manufacturers of refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function must make named spare parts available to professional repairers, including printed circuit boards, thermostats, temperature sensors and starting relays, for at least eight years after the last unit of a model is placed on the market. Parts of those regulations came into force on 1 July 2021 and they extend to England, Wales and Scotland.
That matters for this page because it is the difference between a signal and a credential. A .repair address signals what you do the moment somebody reads it. It certifies nothing. Nobody checks a qualification, a trade body membership or an insurance policy at the point of order: the ICANN agreement is Base and Non-Sponsored, and the extension has been that way since IANA delegated it on 19 December 2013, first to Lone Sunset, LLC and then to Binky Moon in the bulk transfer of March 2018.
It is also worth being clear about search, because repair businesses are sold SEO promises constantly. Google's own guidance on new extensions, posted in July 2015 by John Mueller, says: "Keywords in a TLD do not give any advantage or disadvantage in search." A phone repair shop in Kettering ranks on its Google Business Profile, its reviews and its location pages. The domain is branding, and good branding, but it is not a ranking factor.
Is .repair the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.repair works well if
- You fix things for a living and want the address itself to say so, which saves an explanation on every van, invoice and business card you print.
- Your trading name is a family surname or an abbreviation that tells a stranger nothing, so the extension does the describing the name cannot.
- You take work through referrals and word of mouth, where a spoken address that explains itself is worth more than a search signal.
- You run several repair lines under one roof, phones one day and appliances the next, and want an address that does not pin you to either.
Look elsewhere if
- Almost all repair demand is local and urgent. Google treats this as a generic extension with no country attached, so a .co.uk carries a UK signal this cannot at roughly a third of the price.
- It reads as American to some British ears, where the trade word is more often service, servicing or fixing, and that mismatch shows up most with older customers.
- The extension certifies nothing, so a customer nervous about doorstep traders will still want your Companies House number, your insurance and your reviews before the domain reassures anyone.
One workshop serving one town? A .co.uk will do more for local search and costs about a third as much. See .co.uk pricing.
.repair vs .services: which should you register?
These two cost the same on this site and are run by the same registry, Binky Moon, so the decision is entirely about the promise the word makes. .services entered the root zone on 3 April 2014, .repair on 19 December 2013.
.repair names one thing and names it precisely. A visitor knows what the business does before the page loads, which is worth a great deal on a van and on a phone screen. .services is deliberately loose. It fits a firm that repairs, installs, maintains and supplies, and it will not need replacing when the mix shifts towards installation work.
Pick .repair if repairing is the business and you expect it to stay that way. Pick .services if repair is one of several revenue lines and you would rather the address not argue with your quote sheet.

.repair domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .repair domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyIt will not. Google published its position on keyword extensions in July 2015 and has not moved from it: keywords in a top-level domain give no advantage or disadvantage in search. Repair queries are also intensely local, and local results are driven by your Google Business Profile, your review volume, your proximity to the searcher and pages built around the towns you cover. A .repair address is a branding decision that pays off on vans, invoices and word of mouth.
No. The registry checks nothing. The ICANN agreement behind .repair is Base and Non-Sponsored, so there is no trade body vetting registrations, no certification requirement and no insurance check. Any qualification your work needs, whether that is Gas Safe registration, an electrical competent person scheme or manufacturer accreditation, is entirely separate from the domain, and customers will look for it on the page rather than in the address bar.
Only .repair. There is no .repairs in the root zone at all, so the plural is not a choice you have to make and a customer who types it reaches nothing rather than a competitor. The near neighbours that do exist are .services, .tools and the trade-specific extensions like .plumbing, and the sensible check before ordering is to say your shortlist out loud to somebody who has not seen it written down.
Only in the circumstances the registry publishes. Identity Digital's acceptable use policy lets it suspend, cancel or lock a domain for abuse such as malware or phishing, for trademark infringement, and, more prosaically, where a registrant fails to keep registration information accurate and up to date. That last one catches more ordinary businesses than the dramatic ones. Keep the contact email on the domain working and reachable, and keep the renewal on automatic.
