Who a .energy domain is really priced for
This is the dearest extension in the category by a wide margin, and the price is a positioning decision by the registry rather than anything technical. The DNS behind a .energy domain is the same DNS that sits behind a .co.uk, with the same record types, the same DNSSEC support and the same resolution speed. What the money buys is a word priced as premium because a lot of well funded companies want it.
The word covers an enormous span. Licensed suppliers and generators sit inside it, and so do heat pump and solar installers, EV charging networks, brokers, efficiency consultants, battery start-ups and, in a completely different sense, drinks and fitness brands. Nothing narrows it at the registry end. Which makes the real question a commercial one. Both come out of the same registry stable and both are open to anyone, so this is a question of breadth against price.
.energy covers everything from generation to retail to consultancy, which is its strength for a company spanning several of those and its weakness for one that does not. It is also the more expensive of the two by a clear margin. .solar names one technology, costs around a third less each year, and tells a homeowner exactly what you fit before they read anything. For an MCS-certified installer that specificity is worth more than breadth.
The trap is picking the broad word for a narrow business because it sounds bigger. A householder searching for panels does not want a company that could be doing anything; they want the one that clearly does the thing.

Before committing, run the ten-year figure and compare it against a .co.uk plus a redirect, because the renewal recurs for as long as the business does.
.solar, in most cases. It costs around a third less every year and it tells a homeowner exactly what you fit, which is what they searched for. .energy is broader and vaguer, and breadth only helps a company that spans generation, supply and advice. If you fit panels and batteries for households, the narrower word converts better and leaves budget for the marketing that actually produces enquiries.
It does not help and it costs a little. Google treats .energy as a generic extension with no country attached, so it sends no United Kingdom signal, whereas .co.uk does. Words in the extension are not a ranking factor either, so energy after the dot achieves nothing that energy in your titles and headings does not already do. Buy it for the branding and handle local visibility elsewhere.
