The .builders domain and the plural problem

Test the plural first. Smith Builders reads perfectly as a company name, so smith.builders reads perfectly too. One person trading as a builder gets a slightly odd result, because the address implies a firm with several people in it and the customer meets one van. Say your own trading name in front of it out loud before you spend anything.

The second thing worth knowing is that nothing in this trade is licensed the way customers often assume. Gas work and electrical work sit under their own schemes, but there is no register you must join to call yourself a builder, and a .builders domain does not create one. Binky Moon runs it on the Identity Digital platform, it entered the root zone on 19 December 2013 as one of the very earliest new extensions, and registration is open with no membership check and no accreditation to evidence. What customers actually look for is a scheme such as TrustMark, the Government Endorsed Quality Scheme covering work carried out in and around the home, together with reviews, references and photographs of finished jobs. All of that lives on the site, never in the address.

Priced against the rest of this category it is one of the cheaper options, around half what .build costs. That makes it a reasonable second address to hold and redirect even when the .co.uk stays the one on the letterhead, which for a firm working across two or three counties is usually the right arrangement.

The honest answer

Is .builders the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.builders works well if

  • Your trading name already ends in Builders, so the address reads as a sentence rather than as a domain that had to be padded out.
  • You employ a team and want the site to look like a firm rather than a sole trader, which the plural does before anyone reads the copy.
  • You want a portfolio address for completed jobs that is separate from the enquiry site and easy to print on a hoarding.
  • You are in a region where every sensible .co.uk on your name went to an unrelated business years ago.

Look elsewhere if

  • You are a sole trader. The plural promises staff you do not have, and customers do notice the mismatch when one person turns up.
  • Nearly all your work comes from local search and word of mouth. A .co.uk carries a UK signal in Google that .builders does not, at a much lower annual cost.
  • You expect the extension to imply vetting. Registration is open to anyone anywhere, and a TrustMark or trade body listing is what customers actually check.

Working as one builder rather than as a firm? A .co.uk on your own trading name reads honestly and costs a fraction of this. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.builders vs .contractors: which should you register?

These two cost almost exactly the same and they sound alike to anyone outside the trade, so the decision comes down to who your customers are.

.builders is a domestic word. Householders say builder, they search for builders, and the plural reads like a family firm doing extensions and renovations. .contractors is a commercial word. It belongs to tender documents, subcontract packages and supply chains, and it reads as a business that works for other businesses rather than for homeowners.

Pick by the last five enquiries you took. If they came from people with a kitchen wall to move, .builders speaks their language. If they came from a procurement email with a reference number in the subject line, .contractors does.

.builders domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .builders domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

No. Registration is open worldwide with no trade body membership, no accreditation and nothing to supply. There is also no licence to be a builder in the UK, so there would be little for a registry to check against. Customers know this, which is why they look for a TrustMark listing, insurance details, references and photographs of finished work. Put those on the site and the address becomes the smallest part of the trust question.

A sole trader is usually better on .co.uk. The plural in .builders promises a team, and a customer who books a firm and meets one person notices the gap. The .co.uk also costs far less each year and carries a United Kingdom signal in Google that helps with local searches, which is where most domestic building work comes from. Save .builders for when there really is a crew behind you.

It is neutral, which puts it slightly behind .co.uk for local work. Google treats .builders as a generic extension with no country attached, so a searcher in Northampton gives it no weight, whereas .co.uk signals a UK site. Local visibility comes mostly from a Google Business Profile, consistent name and address details, and reviews. The extension will not decide it, but it is not helping either.

It renews at the standard annual rate shown on this page rather than at an introductory price, and that figure recurs for as long as you keep the name. It is one of the cheaper extensions in this category, around half the cost of .build, though still several times a .co.uk. Transfers in from another registrar add a year to the existing registration and usually complete within a few days.
