Contractor means different things across the Atlantic
Ask an American what a contractor is and you get somebody who builds things. Ask a British person and you are as likely to get somebody working through a limited company on a day rate, which is why contractor and IR35 turn up in the same search results here. A plasterer in Northampton calls himself a plasterer. A joiner calls himself a joiner. Neither of them describes themselves as a contractor, and neither do their customers.
That mismatch is the main thing to weigh before buying a .contractors domain in the UK, because the extension only works if your audience uses the word. It also arrived early, on 8 November 2013, making it one of the first wave of new extensions, and it is run by Binky Moon under Identity Digital.
The registry cannot restrict it. Specification 11 of its ICANN agreement commits it to open registration, treats the string as a generic dictionary word, and forbids it from limiting eligibility by identity. No trade body, no certification scheme, no licence check. There is also the plural to think about: yourname.contractors reads as a firm with staff, which is a mismatch if you are one person with a van.

.contractors vs .co.uk: which should you register?
For a British trade business the .co.uk wins on nearly every measure that produces work. It is a UK geographic signal Google uses in UK results, it lets you put the trade and the town in the name where local searchers will match it, transfers between registrars complete almost immediately through an IPS tag change, and it costs about a third as much each year.
.contractors earns a place in one shape of business: a firm large enough that the plural is true, bidding for commercial work where the word is the industry term rather than a translation. Even then it works better as a memorable second address pointing at a .co.uk than as the site your local customers are asked to find.

It is worth thinking about, because the extension itself is plural and a customer reads that as a company with people in it. If you are one person, an address ending in .contractors sets an expectation your first phone call has to correct. That is not fatal, and some sole traders are happy to look larger. Just make the choice deliberately, rather than discovering it when somebody asks how many of you there are.
