The longer answer

Where a .construction domain earns its twelve characters

Twelve characters after the dot. Weigh that first, because the address has to fit on a van door, a hoarding board and a business card, and somebody has to type it correctly on a phone with wet hands. Set against that, it is the least ambiguous word in this whole category. Nobody hears construction and thinks of a software pipeline, which is exactly what happens with .build.

The .construction domain went live early. Binky Moon runs it on the Identity Digital platform and it entered the root zone on 8 November 2013, in the first tranche of new extensions, so more of the obvious names went in the opening years than most buyers expect. Registration is open to anyone, with no accreditation, no trade body membership and no evidence of a single completed project.

That last point is worth holding on to if the site exists to win work. Main contractors and public sector buyers pre-qualify their supply chain, and what gets examined is insurance cover, filed accounts, health and safety records and referenced projects. A domain is not evidence and never will be. What it can do is give a project portfolio a memorable home, and the portfolio is the page a buyer opens once the paperwork clears. Priced at around half what .build costs, it is the sensible pick of the two for a firm that describes itself by the industry rather than by the verb.

The honest answer

Is .construction the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.construction works well if

  • You tender for work, and the address goes on prequalification documents where a precise industry word reads better than a clever one.
  • You want a portfolio or case study site for completed schemes that sits apart from the corporate site and outlives any one campaign.
  • Your company name is generic and the extension does the explaining, so nobody has to read a strapline to know what you do.
  • You considered .build and disliked that a large share of its registrations belong to software companies rather than to contractors.

Look elsewhere if

  • The address will live mostly on vans, signage and workwear, where twelve characters plus a company name becomes hard to read at speed.
  • Your enquiries come from local domestic customers. A .co.uk carries a UK signal in Google that .construction does not, at a fraction of the cost.
  • You want the extension to signal accreditation. It signals nothing, because registration is open to anyone in the world with a card.

Working mainly for householders in your own county? A .co.uk is shorter, cheaper and better for local search. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.construction vs .co.uk: which should you register?

For a British construction firm this is the choice that matters, and the two extensions are good at completely different things.

.co.uk is the default a UK customer types, it tells Google the site targets the United Kingdom, it costs a small fraction of the alternative, WHOIS privacy is free for UK individuals under Nominet rules, and a transfer between registrars is near instant because it is only an IPS tag change. .construction gives you availability and clarity: the two-word .co.uk you wanted has probably gone to somebody else, and this extension explains the business before anyone reads a line of copy.

Firms that tender tend to hold both, with the .co.uk on the letterhead and the .construction pointing at the project portfolio. That is one extra renewal a year and it settles the argument permanently.

.construction domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .construction domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

None of it. Registration is open worldwide with no checks of any kind, and the registry agreement carries no sector safeguards. That cuts both ways: you can register one this afternoon, and so can anyone else, which is why buyers verify contractors through prequalification documents, insurance certificates and referenced projects instead. Use the site to make those easy to find rather than expecting the address to imply them.

.construction is the safer choice for a contractor and .build the better choice for a brand. .construction is unambiguous and costs around half as much, but it runs to twelve characters and is awkward on signage. .build is five letters and easy to say, at close to double the price, and it carries a strong software association because development teams use the word constantly. Length, cost and clarity all point one way.

It is long, and that is a real cost rather than a cosmetic one. Twelve characters after the dot plus a company name in front makes for a wide address on a van or a hoarding, and long addresses get mistyped on phones. Keep the part before the dot short, avoid hyphens entirely, and test the whole thing printed at the size it will actually appear before you commit.

Usually a few days rather than the near-instant change a .uk domain gets. You will need the authorisation code from your current registrar, the domain unlocked, and the registration more than 60 days old. The remaining term travels with the domain, and the transfer itself buys another twelve months. Point the DNS at the new host before you start so the website and email keep working throughout.
