What .rentals promises, and what it leaves out
The plural does one job well and one job badly. It promises quantity, so a visitor arriving at a .rentals address expects a list and not a single item, which is exactly right for a hire catalogue, a holiday let portfolio or a multi-branch letting agency. What it will not tell anyone is what you rent out. Marquees, excavators, wetsuits, flats and camper vans all sit under the same word, so the address sets an expectation of choice and leaves the subject entirely to your brand name.
That is a real trade-off rather than a flaw. If the word in front carries the category, the plural adds scale for free. If the word in front is abstract, you have bought an address that says "several of something".
The registry position is settled and dull, which is what you want. IANA delegated .rentals on 30 January 2014 to Big Hollow, LLC, and it moved to Binky Moon, LLC in the bulk transfer of 195 other extensions recorded on 23 March 2018. The ICANN agreement, signed on 5 December 2013, is Base and Non-Sponsored, so no trade body vets registrations and nothing about your business is checked.
One useful accident: there is no .rental in the root zone. A visitor who drops the s reaches nothing at all, which fails cleanly rather than landing them on a competitor. That is a better position than the property extensions where the singular and plural both exist under different owners.

Look elsewhere if
- You have one cottage or one van. The plural writes a cheque your inventory cannot cash, and a visitor who expected choice notices.
- It costs nearly four times a .co.uk every year, and holiday let and hire enquiries in the UK come overwhelmingly from local and map-based searches where a .co.uk carries a signal this does not.
- Spoken aloud it is easily heard as .rent, which is a separate live extension owned by a different registry, so a phone enquiry can end up somewhere else.
.rentals vs .co.uk: which should you register?
For a hire or letting business trading in Britain, this is the comparison that actually decides the order, and it is not close on cost. A .co.uk is a fraction of the price and, in Google's own account of how it treats extensions, most country-code domains are used to geotarget the site, which tells the search engine your pages are aimed at people in the UK. .rentals gets no such signal, because generic extensions carry none.
.rentals earns its place where the audience is not primarily British, where the .co.uk you want has gone, or where the domain is doing marketing work rather than carrying the whole business. A villa portfolio letting to Germans and Americans is a good example: the UK signal would be pointing at the wrong country anyway.
The pragmatic answer for most UK firms is to hold the .co.uk as the trading address and use .rentals for a catalogue subsite or a campaign, with both pointing at the same place.
