How kitchen buyers search, and where .kitchen fits

A new kitchen is one of the biggest discretionary purchases a British household makes, and the search behaviour behind it looks nothing like buying a kettle. People start with pictures, spend weeks comparing, visit two or three showrooms, and type queries with a town in them: kitchen fitters, kitchen showroom, kitchen design, each followed by where they live. .kitchen does not compete in any of that. Google has been explicit that a keyword in the extension gives no advantage in search, so this is a branding decision from start to finish.

Judged as a branding decision it does well. One word, one meaning, no plural trap, no spelling question, and it survives being called across a showroom or written on a quotation. It came into the root zone on 13 November 2013 under Just Goodbye, LLC and moved to Binky Moon, LLC in the March 2018 transfer of 196 extensions, on a Base, Non-Sponsored ICANN contract signed on 20 September 2013. Nobody checks whether you have ever fitted one.

The figure to weigh it against is the price. .kitchen sits near the top of this category, over five times a .co.uk, and it renews at that level every year. For a showroom taking three or four kitchen orders a month that is trivial. For a two person fitting outfit working out of a van it is a real line in the accounts.

Staged payments are the operational point. Kitchens are paid for in instalments, often starting with several thousand pounds before anything is delivered, and the email carrying those bank details has to look like it came from the company the customer sat down with. Keep the address on the quotation, the invoice and the showroom window identical, and register the .co.uk alongside so a customer who guesses still lands on you.

The honest answer

Is .kitchen the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.kitchen works well if

  • You run a showroom, and the address goes on the window, the vehicle and every quotation, where one unambiguous word earns its place.
  • You design kitchens rather than fit them, and want an address that states the specialism without a strapline underneath.
  • Your company name plus kitchen reads as a phrase people can repeat correctly after hearing it once.
  • You supply worktops, appliances or cabinetry to the trade nationally, so a UK signal is not what you need from an address.

Look elsewhere if

  • Most of your work arrives through local searches. The extension contributes nothing there, and a .co.uk at least tells Google which country you are in.
  • It is among the dearer extensions in this category, over five times a .co.uk every year, which is real money for a small fitting business.
  • You fit bathrooms and bedrooms as well. The word boxes you into one room, and rebranding a domain later is harder than rebranding a van.

Fitting kitchens within an hour of home? A .co.uk costs a fraction of this and supports the local listing that brings the enquiries. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.kitchen vs .design: which should you register?

Kitchen designers shortlist these two more often than you would expect, and they pull in opposite directions. .design describes the practice. .kitchen describes the product.

.design travels. It fits a studio doing kitchens now and bathrooms, boot rooms and whole house work later, and it sits comfortably beside architects and interior practices. .kitchen commits. It tells a homeowner at a glance that this is the thing you do all day, which is exactly what somebody planning one room wants to hear.

Both cost several times a .co.uk, and .design is run by a different registry, GoDaddy Registry rather than Identity Digital. If the business is you and one fitter, the honest answer is often neither, and the money goes further on photographs of finished work.

FAQ

.kitchen domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .kitchen domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

No. Google has said that keywords in a top level domain give no advantage or disadvantage in search, so the word kitchen in the extension does nothing for that query. Local queries are answered mostly from the map results, driven by your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are, alongside pages naming the towns you cover. Buy .kitchen because it reads well on a showroom window, not because you expect it to move you up a page.

No. .kitchen is open to anybody in any country, with nothing checked at the point of order: no trade card, no company number, no showroom. That follows from its ICANN contract type, Base and Non-Sponsored, which is the class with no community body vetting registrations. The registry can still act afterwards under Identity Digital's acceptable use policy, which covers abuse and inaccurate registration data and specifically forbids implying you hold a credential you do not have.

It is among the dearer options here, over five times a .co.uk every year, and that deserves taking seriously if the business is one van and one fitter. The address earns its cost where a customer reads it cold: a showroom window, a vehicle, a printed quotation. It earns much less when nearly every enquiry arrives through a Business Profile listing or a recommendation, because then almost nobody types the address at all.

Nothing technical, but the address starts working against you. The word is the entire point of the extension, and somebody wanting a wet room does not read a .kitchen address as an invitation. Moving a website to a new domain later means redirects, reprinted material, updated listings and a spell where Google reworks which address it shows. If you can see that expansion coming, choose something that stretches, or register the broader address now and grow into it.
