Who actually uses a .horse domain

The most useful published evidence about .horse domains is the registry's own showcase. GoDaddy Registry picks out three sites on its .horse page: Equilab, a ride-tracking app; the Certified Horsemanship Association, a US body that certifies riding instructors; and Shifty She, a Thoroughbred racehorse. An app, a certifying organisation and a horse. Not one livery yard, not one riding school.

Read that carefully before spending anything, because the British equestrian trade is mostly local businesses: yards, schools, farriers, saddlers, equine vets and physios. Those businesses get found through a place name and a map pin. A .horse is a generic extension with no country attached to it, so it contributes to neither.

Its own history has been quieter than most. It entered the root zone on 28 February 2014 under Top Level Domain Holdings Limited, the Minds and Machines applicant, and IANA recorded its transfer to Registry Services, LLC on 14 September 2021. Registry Services is GoDaddy Registry, which is why nic.horse now lands on a GoDaddy page. A change of registry operator is invisible to a domain holder: your registration, renewal date and nameservers all carry on unchanged.

Where .horse works is when the horse is the brand rather than the service. A stallion, a stud, a competition yard with a following, a breed society, a magazine, an app. If your customers are within an hour's drive and typing "livery near me" into a phone, register the .co.uk and put the difference towards better photographs.

The honest answer

Is .horse the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.horse works well if

  • The horse is the brand. Studs, stallions, competition yards and breed societies all read naturally with the name in front and .horse behind.
  • You are building a product for riders rather than a local service, so a national or international audience matters more to you than a county one.
  • Your .co.uk needs "equestrian" or "equine" bolted on to be available, and you would rather have the short version.
  • The address has to survive being read out at a show or painted on a lorry, where "dot horse" is easy to hear and hard to mishear.

Look elsewhere if

  • You run a livery yard, riding school or equine practice serving one area. Local search is your traffic, and .horse carries no UK signal in Google.
  • A good part of your clientele will type .co.uk whatever you print. That is not a criticism of them, it is a cost you carry in visits that never arrive.
  • At £30.99 a year against £9.99 for a .co.uk, you pay three times over for an address most of your customers reach through a Facebook post anyway.

Yards, schools and equine practices serving one area get more from a .co.uk, at a third of the price. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.horse vs .club: which should you register?

Riding clubs, pony clubs and hunt or drag packs are the group most likely to be weighing these two, and they answer different questions. A .club names the kind of organisation you are. A .horse names the subject you exist for. Which one you want depends on whether the recognisable part of your name is the activity or the club itself.

There is a practical tiebreaker. If your name already ends in the word club, a .club address repeats it and a .horse address does not. If your name is a place plus the word club, neither extension saves you much, and a .co.uk will serve you better in local search than either.

On price the gap is £11 a year, which over the life of a club website is rarely the deciding factor. Say both out loud to a committee before you choose. That test settles this more often than a spreadsheet does.

.horse domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .horse domain.

Anyone can register one. ICANN lists the .horse registry agreement as base and non-sponsored, so there is no charter, no equestrian body vetting applications and no proof of anything to supply. That openness cuts both ways. A yard, stud or society name is not reserved for you on .horse, and the only way to hold it is to register it before somebody else does.

Usually not as your main address. A yard fills its boxes from within a small radius, and that traffic comes from local searches and the map results, where a .co.uk carries a UK signal and .horse carries none. A .horse can still earn its keep as a second name redirected at the main site, particularly if it is shorter or catchier on a gate sign. Start with the .co.uk and add to it.

Not in any way you would notice. IANA recorded the transfer from Top Level Domain Holdings to Registry Services, LLC, part of GoDaddy Registry, on 14 September 2021. Registration, expiry date, nameservers and DNS records all carried straight over. Registry transfers are a contractual matter between the operator and ICANN, and domain holders are not asked to do anything. Wholesale prices can move afterwards, which is the one thing worth watching.

Anywhere from a few hours to seven days, depending on how quickly your current registrar releases it. You will need the authorisation code from them and the domain has to be unlocked. ICANN transfer policy also allows a transfer to be refused if the domain was registered or last transferred within the previous 60 days. The remaining registration period carries over and the transfer adds a further year on top of it.
