What a .furniture domain costs across a shop's lifetime
Start with the number, because it should decide this before anything else does. .furniture is among the most expensive extensions in the property category: roughly eight and a half times the annual cost of a .co.uk, and about seventy per cent more than a .store. Registry pricing has nothing to do with the technology, which is identical on every extension, so what you are buying is one English word.
Sometimes the word is worth it. A maker whose whole proposition is the object, oak, walnut, cut joints, a six week lead time, gets an address that describes the product before a single image loads. It looks a lot more expensive on a general home retail site selling sofas alongside mattresses, rugs and lighting, because there the address narrows the shop instead of describing it.
The registry history takes a line. .furniture reached the root zone on 17 April 2014, later than most of the property and trade extensions, delegated to Lone Fields, LLC and moved to Binky Moon, LLC in the March 2018 transfer of 196 extensions. This is the real choice for anyone selling furniture online rather than making it. .store came into the root zone on 11 February 2016 under Radix, two years after .furniture, and it names what the site does rather than what it sells.
.store stretches. Add mattresses next spring and outdoor next summer and the address still fits. .furniture does not stretch, and on a maker's site that narrowness is the message rather than a limitation.
The price runs the wrong way round. A .furniture costs meaningfully more each year than a .store, so the narrower option is also the dearer one. That is unusual, and worth pausing on before you commit a business to it.
