The renewal question every .wedding buyer should ask
A wedding website has a working life of about eighteen months. A domain name is an annual bill that runs until somebody cancels it. Those two facts sit awkwardly together, and settling them is the first job before you buy a .wedding domain, because the honest answer is different for a couple than for a supplier.
For a couple, the sensible plan is to register it, use it, and let it go, with your eyes open about what follows. Once you stop renewing, the name runs through a redemption period and then drops back into the pool, where anyone can pick it up. Photographs, guest lists and address details want taking down before that point rather than after. For a supplier the calculation flips. This is a permanent trading address and the renewal is a business cost, so the question becomes whether the word is one you want on invoices for the next decade.
The extension is open to everybody. GoDaddy Registry, operating as Registry Services, LLC, states on its own site that anyone may register a .wedding globally on a first-come, first-served basis. It took the contract over on 14 September 2021 from Top Level Domain Holdings Limited, which had held it since the string entered the root zone in July 2014. There is no requirement to be in the trade, which cuts the other way too: nothing stops a competitor registering your business name with .wedding attached if you have not.

.wedding vs .co.uk: which should you register?
One names the occasion and the other names the country, and a UK wedding supplier arguably needs both said somewhere. The question is which belongs in the address.
The .co.uk is the workhorse. Google reads it as a British site, which matters enormously in a trade where almost every search carries a place name. Nominet's consent-based rules mean a UK individual registrant is not published in the public WHOIS by default, so privacy costs nothing. Transfers between registrars are an IPS tag change and complete almost immediately, where a .wedding transfer takes hours to days. And the annual price is a fraction of it.
What .wedding gives back is instant comprehension. Nobody needs the proposition explained, on a stand at a wedding fair or on the side of a van. For a couple the comparison barely applies, because the site is temporary and local search is irrelevant. For a business, the pattern that works is a .co.uk carrying the trade and a .wedding carrying the message.

Register it as early as you can, because the obvious combinations of common first names go quickly and there is no way to reserve one in advance.
It expires, spends a redemption period in limbo where only you can recover it and only for a fee, then drops back into the pool for anyone to register. That is worth planning for rather than discovering. Take down photographs, guest addresses and any RSVP data before the domain lapses, not after, because once somebody else holds the name your old pages are gone from your control. If you want the address kept, the cheapest option is to keep renewing it and point it at a single page.

On a .wedding, as on every other extension outside .uk, privacy is a paid add-on. For a supplier, usually yes, but as a second address rather than a replacement. The .co.uk keeps the local search value, the email and the paperwork, while the .wedding goes on the fair stand, the brochure and the social profile where its job is to be understood instantly. Point it at the same site.
