Why .clothing was one of the first new gTLDs

.clothing was in the very first wave. When ICANN opened the root zone to hundreds of new endings, this one was delegated in October 2013, two and a half years before .shop and before most of the endings the public now recognises. The head start bought it something the later arrivals had to work for: a long run as one of the few new extensions people had actually seen in the wild.

The word itself is a product category, and that cuts both ways. brand.clothing reads as a label's own line and suits a single-product house beautifully. It reads oddly for a retailer who also sells footwear, bags and homeware, because the address has narrowed the shop before a visitor sees the first photograph. Work out which of those you are before you order, because moving a domain later costs traffic you do not get back.

Selling clothes online in Great Britain also brings a labelling duty that catches new shops out. The assimilated textile labelling regulation requires the fibre composition to be indicated in catalogues and trade literature, and says the information must be clearly visible to the consumer before the purchase, including where the purchase is made electronically. The product page is where that lands, and the labelling has to be in English. Put it in the product template rather than the free-text description and it stays right as the range grows.

Binky Moon, LLC runs the extension under Identity Digital with no eligibility test at all. It does reserve names at its own discretion, premium ones included, and the reserved list is not published: registrars may ask their account managers for it. If a name you expected to be free is not there, that is usually the reason.

The honest answer

Is .clothing the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.clothing works well if

  • You are a single-line label and the whole business is garments, so an address that narrows the category costs you nothing at all.
  • Your brand name has gone on .com and .co.uk and you would rather have the clean word than pad it out with shop, uk or official.
  • You sell wholesale to buyers who read a domain as a description of the range rather than as a shopfront they are about to check out of.
  • You need the ending to carry the category where there is no room to explain: a swing tag, a mailer, a bio link.

Look elsewhere if

  • You sell more than clothes. Footwear, accessories and homeware all sit awkwardly under an address that says clothing on the tin.
  • Most orders come from UK shoppers searching for the brand plus a town. A .co.uk carries a UK signal that this does not, at a fraction of the cost.
  • You dictate the address to suppliers and stockists often. Eight letters after the dot is a lot, and people who have never met the ending will hear .co.uk or .com.

Selling more than garments? A .shop describes the whole range and will not box you into one category. See .shop pricing.

Head to head

.clothing vs .shop: which should you register?

The difference is whether you are describing the product or the transaction. A .clothing tells a visitor what is inside. A .shop tells them they can buy. If the range is going to widen, the second ages better. If it never will, the first is more specific and usually easier to say.

There is a recognition gap too, and it runs the opposite way to the ages. GMO Registry, Inc. brought .shop into the root zone in May 2016, well after .clothing arrived in October 2013, but it has been marketed hard since and the word is doing an obvious job. A shopper who has never seen either will still guess correctly what a .shop is for.

Neither carries a country signal, so neither does anything for you in UK search that a .co.uk would not do better. Choose on how the name reads, and keep a .co.uk for the searches.

.clothing domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .clothing domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

It is, provided garments are the whole business. The ending names the product, so brand.clothing reads as a label rather than as a marketplace, which suits a single line well. Where it stops working is range creep: the day you add shoes or homeware, the address describes a shop you no longer run. If you can see that coming, buy something that will not box you in and keep the .clothing pointed at it.

Yes, if you sell textile products to consumers in Great Britain. The assimilated textile labelling regulation requires fibre composition to appear in catalogues and trade literature and to be clearly visible to the consumer before purchase, including where the purchase is made electronically. In practice that means on the product page rather than only on the garment label, and it must be in English. Build the field into the product template so it stays correct as new lines arrive.

No. Keywords inside a domain stopped moving rankings a long time ago, and .clothing carries no geographic signal, so it will not do for you in Google UK what a .co.uk does. What it buys is a name people remember and a category they grasp at a glance, which shows up in direct traffic and in how well the address survives being spoken. Treat it as branding and do the search work on the pages themselves.

It is most likely reserved. Identity Digital reserves names from registration at any time, including ones it has classed as premium, and says registrars may request the reserved list from their account managers rather than publishing it. A name can therefore be held back with no public record and no website on it. Send us the exact name and we will find out what the registry actually says before you build a brand around it.
