What is a .dating domain?

The .dating domain is built for online dating platforms, matchmaking services, and relationship coaches. The dating industry is worth billions globally, and a .dating domain tells users they've arrived at a site designed to help them meet someone. It's also used by niche dating communities and dating advice bloggers.

What UK law now expects of a .dating site

Buying the domain is the easy part and it is not the part that will take your time. A dating site where people create profiles and message each other meets the definition of a user-to-user service in section 3(1) of the Online Safety Act 2023: an internet service by means of which content generated, uploaded or shared by one user may be encountered by another user of the service. That wording catches almost every dating product, including a niche community with a few hundred members run at weekends. Ofcom regulates the regime.

The extension changes none of that. What it does is state plainly what the service is, which makes a .dating domain a poor place to be vague about how the site works. Publish the moderation policy, the reporting route and the company behind it, because the address has already told visitors what to expect.

Trust is the second half of the problem. A new dating brand starts from behind whatever ending it uses, which is why Identity Digital's rules on phishing, impersonation and fraudulent practices matter more here than on most extensions. Binky Moon, LLC operates .dating, and the registry may deny, suspend, cancel, redirect or transfer a registration at its sole discretion, including where registration details are not kept accurate. Visitors see none of that, so the reassurance has to be on the page: a real company name, a registered address and a way to report someone.

On price, this is one of the dearer endings we sell and it renews at that rate annually. For a UK-only community a .co.uk costs a fraction and carries a UK search signal this does not. For a platform aiming wider, the word does real work and the fee is a small line in a budget dominated by moderation.

The honest answer

Is .dating the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.dating works well if

  • You are building a platform and want the address to state the category without a strapline, which helps in an app store listing and in a press mention.
  • Your brand name works better alone than with the word dating bolted on: quiet.dating rather than quietdating.com.
  • You run a community where the word narrows usefully, such as a service for one faith, one profession or one age group.
  • You publish advice or reviews about dating rather than running a platform, so the ending describes the subject instead of a product.

Look elsewhere if

  • You are testing an idea. This is one of the pricier endings we sell, it renews at the same rate every year, and a test that closes still costs you the renewal.
  • Your users are UK only and arrive from Google. A .co.uk carries a UK signal that .dating does not, and costs a fraction as much.
  • Trust is your main obstacle. An unfamiliar ending gives a cautious visitor one more reason to hesitate, and people choosing a dating service are cautious by default.

A UK-only niche community rather than a platform? A .co.uk does more for local search and costs far less. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.dating vs .com: which should you register?

The .com is still what a cautious visitor types and still what they assume, and caution is the default state of anyone choosing a dating service. That is the argument for it, and in this category it is stronger than in most.

Against that, the .com you actually want is almost certainly taken. The honest alternative is usually a padded version with a filler word or a country code stuck on the end, and a clean two-syllable name on .dating reads better than that in an app listing, on a card and in a URL bar.

Where the budget allows, hold both and advertise the .com. In this category the redirect is worth the second registration fee on its own, because it removes one reason for a nervous visitor to close the tab.

.dating domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .dating domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

There is no dating licence, but there are duties. A service where users create profiles and message each other meets the definition of a user-to-user service in section 3(1) of the Online Safety Act 2023, which describes an internet service by means of which content generated, uploaded or shared by a user may be encountered by other users. Ofcom regulates that regime. The domain has nothing to do with it, because the duties attach to the service whatever ending the address uses.

Only when the name you want is free on it and padded on .com. The .com is still the ending a nervous visitor assumes, and dating visitors are nervous, so the safest answer for a consumer platform is to hold both and advertise the .com. Where .dating earns its cost is when the alternative carries a filler word, because a short clean address is worth more in an app listing or a press mention than the ending is.

Yes, and the policy says so plainly. Identity Digital reserves the right at its sole discretion, at any time and without limitation, to deny, suspend, cancel, redirect or transfer a registration, or place it on registry lock or hold. The listed reasons include abusive use, phishing, impersonation and a registrant failing to keep registration information accurate or up to date. That last one is the trap for honest operators, so keep the contact record current when you move office.

Get the authorisation code from your current registrar, unlock the domain, and check that more than 60 days have passed since it was registered or last transferred. Then order the transfer here and approve the confirmation email. It usually completes within a few days rather than the near-instant change a .uk gets, because a .uk transfer is only an IPS tag swap and ours is STACK. Your remaining registration time carries over and a year is added on top.
