Where .spot works, and where it turns on you
.spot is one of a small group of ordinary English words Amazon Registry Services sells rather than keeping for itself. Its general availability registration policy was last updated on 10 January 2025, and the technical back end is run by Nominet UK, the organisation behind .uk. That is a better pedigree than the extension's obscurity would suggest.
The word is both the appeal and the trap. Spot means a place, which is the sense being sold. It also means a blemish, a difficulty, and the act of noticing something. For a bar, a climbing wall, a market stall or a local listings site, thespot reads as a destination. For anything in skincare it reads as the thing your customers are trying to get rid of. Write the full address out, at the size it will appear on a sign, before you order it.
Amazon's terms are unusually explicit about what you are holding. The policy describes registration as a temporary, revocable and non-transferrable licence, says the registry may monitor or analyse any website you associate with the name, and requires you to certify your contact details annually on pain of cancellation. Most registries reserve similar powers in vaguer words. This one writes them down.

- Anyone with the legal capacity to enter a registration agreement. No sector test, no local presence rule and nothing to supply. Names run from 1 to 63 characters, must start and end with an alphanumeric character, and cannot carry a hyphen in both the third and fourth positions unless the label encodes an internationalised name.
- A revocable licence
- The registration policy states that registration provides a temporary, revocable and non-transferrable licence to register that domain name, and that you agree the registry may monitor or analyse any website or other online presence you associate with it.
- Annual certification of your details
- You must keep contact details complete, accurate and current, and certify their accuracy annually. The registry reserves the right to verify them periodically and to cancel, suspend or revoke the domain for non-compliance, so a stale email address on the registration is a live risk rather than a paperwork issue.
- Reserved, blocked and premium names
- The registry may withhold, allocate to itself, restrict or block names at its own discretion, on top of the reserved names required by the registry agreement. If the word you want is held back you will find out when it shows as unavailable, and there is no published list to check first.

.spot vs .co.uk: which should you register?
A .co.uk is the practical choice for a venue with a postcode. Google treats it as a UK signal, British customers read it without a second thought, and it transfers between registrars almost instantly because a .uk transfer is an IPS tag change rather than a multi-day process. On price it is not close either.
A .spot gives you a shorter, more distinctive address that reads as a place rather than a company. For a venue with a strong name and an audience that finds it through social rather than search, that can be worth the difference. Run both where the budget allows: the .co.uk on the listing, the maps entry and the invoices, and the .spot on the door.
