What is a .shiksha domain?

Shiksha means "education" in Hindi, and the .shiksha domain gives Indian educational institutions, EdTech startups, and coaching centres a web address rooted in their own language. With over 600 million Hindi speakers worldwide, .shiksha connects with one of the largest education markets on the planet. It's particularly powerful for organisations targeting students and parents who search in Hindi.

Who should register .shiksha?

Why choose .shiksha?

  • Resonates with Hindi-speaking audiences

The longer answer

The .shiksha domain, transliteration and Indian education

Here is the quiet problem with .shiksha, and it is not one the marketing addresses. The word is Hindi, but the extension is a Latin-script transliteration of it. A reader who searches in Devanagari is not typing shiksha, and a reader who searches in English is typing education. The extension therefore sits between two audiences and belongs fully to neither: it works best for people who are comfortable in both scripts, which describes a large slice of urban Indian education buyers and very few outside them.

Afilias took it into the root zone in January 2014 and it now sits with Identity Digital. Registration is open, with no Indian address, no institutional accreditation and no education licence required, so a UK tutoring company can hold one as easily as a Delhi coaching centre.

Against that, the annual fee is high for a niche extension, and India's education sector already has well-established addresses under .in and .co.in that carry a country signal in Google. For a UK reader, this is almost never the right buy. For an operator already selling into Hindi-speaking markets, it is a defensible one.

The honest answer

Is .shiksha the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.shiksha works well if

  • You run coaching, tuition or an education platform aimed at Hindi-speaking families who read and type comfortably in Latin script.
  • Your brand already uses the word shiksha, and holding the extension stops somebody else building a similar name in front of your audience.
  • You want a distinctive address for an Indian education product that will not be confused with the many .com and .in names in the same space.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your audience is in India and searching in English or Hindi script. A .in or .co.in carries a country signal in Google that this extension does not.
  • The annual cost is high for an extension few people outside one market will recognise, and it renews at that level every year.
  • Your customers are in the UK. A word most British parents cannot spell after hearing it once is a permanent drag on referrals and phone enquiries.

Selling tuition or courses to UK families? A .co.uk is what parents type and costs a small fraction of this each year. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.shiksha vs .org: which should you register?

Education organisations reach for .org out of habit, and the habit is well founded. It is understood everywhere, it reads as institutional rather than commercial, and it is inexpensive. Nothing about it says India or Hindi, which is either its weakness or its strength depending on who you are talking to.

A .shiksha does the opposite: it says one specific thing to one specific audience and nothing to anyone else. That is worth paying for when the audience is the whole business, and hard to justify when it is a segment. Most education providers with an Indian arm are better served by a .org or a .in as the main address, with a .shiksha pointed at the Hindi-language section if the budget allows it.

Shiksha is the Hindi word for education, written here as a Latin-script transliteration rather than in Devanagari. The extension was launched with Indian education in mind: schools, coaching centres, tuition services, education technology and course platforms. Because it is a transliteration, it speaks most directly to readers who move between Hindi and English, which is common in urban Indian education and rare elsewhere.

No. There is no Indian address requirement, no accreditation to prove and no education licence to supply. Identity Digital operates it as an open generic extension, so registration is first come, first served for anyone anywhere. That also means the extension carries no implication that the site behind it is a recognised or approved provider, which is worth remembering both as a buyer and as a parent.

Almost never, unless your students are Hindi-speaking families and you are marketing to them directly. The annual fee is several times a .co.uk, British parents will misspell it, and Google gives it no UK signal at all. If you serve Hindi-speaking families in the UK, the better structure is a .co.uk for the business with a .shiksha pointed at the pages written for that community.
