Why .academy is open when .edu is not
Nobody checks. That is the first thing to know about .academy, and it is the difference between this extension and the academic namespaces it borrows its tone from. IANA lists .edu as a sponsored top-level domain, administered by EDUCAUSE and in the root zone since 1985, with entry controlled by the sponsor. .academy is a generic extension, delegated on 12 December 2013 and run today by Binky Moon, LLC, and anybody in any country can register one this afternoon with no qualification of any kind.
That openness is both why it works and why it needs care. It works because most training is not accredited and does not pretend to be. A martial arts club, a coding bootcamp, a sales training business and a football coaching programme all call themselves an academy, and none of them are implying a university. It needs care because the word carries a suggestion of standards, and a reader who knows the extension is unrestricted will discount that suggestion completely.
Our steer is to let the site carry the credibility the extension cannot. Name your trainers. Publish the syllabus, the hours, the assessment, and whichever awarding body actually sits behind the certificate if one does. If none does, describe the course instead of leaning on the word. An address ending .academy backed by a thin page does more harm than a .co.uk backed by a good one.
Is .academy the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.academy works well if
- You run structured training with a course, a cohort and an end point, where academy is the word your learners already use.
- You are a club or coaching programme, such as a martial arts, music or football academy, and the word is literally in your name.
- You are launching a paid course business separate from a consultancy that already trades on another domain.
- Your audience is international, so a UK extension would narrow you and the .com at a usable length has gone.
Look elsewhere if
- You want the extension to imply accreditation. It cannot: .academy is open to anyone, and buyers who know that discount it entirely.
- You are a UK training provider selling to local parents or employers, where a .co.uk carries a country signal .academy does not.
- You run one workshop a year. An annual renewal at several times a .co.uk is a poor fit for something that is not a standing business.
Training UK learners who search locally? A .co.uk does more for local search and costs less every year. See .co.uk pricing.
.academy vs .education: which should you register?
These two sit beside each other in the same registry range and get chosen for different reasons. .academy implies a place with a programme: a cohort, a syllabus, an end date. .education is the wider word and covers the sector rather than the institution, which suits an organisation whose subject is education itself as much as one that teaches.
Pick .academy when learners enrol on something specific and the word is already how you describe yourself. Pick .education when you are a body, a publisher, a charity or a supplier serving the sector, and the address has to be broader than one programme.
Length is the tiebreak nobody mentions. Academy is seven letters, education is nine, and both sit behind whatever name you have chosen. Read the full address out loud before you commit, because your learners will be reading it far more often than you will.

.academy domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .academy domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNo. .academy is a generic top-level domain with no eligibility rules, no accreditation check and no documents to supply, open to anyone in any country. That is the opposite of .edu, which IANA lists as a sponsored top-level domain administered by EDUCAUSE, where the sponsor controls who may hold one. The practical result is that .academy says what you call yourself, not what anybody has verified about you, so the credibility has to come from the site itself.
For being found locally, no. Google reads a .co.uk as pointing at the United Kingdom and gives generic extensions like .academy no geographic weight at all, so a provider chasing local employers or parents is better served by the .co.uk. .academy earns its place on brand: it names what you do in the address itself, which helps on a printed prospectus or a course listing. Plenty of providers register both and point one at the other.
It can register one, and nothing in the registry rules prevents it. The thing to weigh is what parents and staff expect to type. A UK school address is usually guessed at as a .co.uk, a .sch.uk or a .org.uk, so a .academy is better treated as an addition than a replacement for whatever is already on letterheads, signage and in every parent's contacts. Changing an address a school community has learned means redirecting the old one for years, not months.
Renewal is charged at the standard annual rate shown on this page, not a discounted first-year price that jumps afterwards. It sits several times above a .co.uk, and that gap repeats for as long as you hold the domain, which for a training business is usually as long as the courses run. Some short single-word .academy names are held back by the registry as premium registrations and priced separately, so check the figure quoted at checkout rather than the headline one.
