Education Domain Names
Education shapes the future, and the right domain name shapes the first impression of your learning institution or platform. Extensions like .academy, .school, .education, .university, and .training provide an immediate educational context that builds confidence with students, parents, and employers.
Whether you run a traditional school, a private training provider, an online learning platform, or a scientific research organisation, education domains signal authority and purpose. The .academy extension has proven particularly popular with both formal institutions and skill-based training providers, whilst .wiki serves knowledge bases and collaborative learning resources.
At 365i, we support the education sector with simple domain registration, reliable DNS, and free email forwarding on every domain. From primary schools creating their first website to universities expanding their digital presence, our education domains provide a credible and professional foundation for learning online.
How .school, .academy, .training and .university differ in practice
Two different buyers land on this page and they need opposite advice. A school, a college or a training provider is an institution: it will still be here in fifteen years, the website will outlive several members of staff, and whoever renews the domain in 2031 was not in the room when it was chosen. That argues for boring and cheap. A private tutor or a course seller is doing marketing and can afford an extension that does some of the selling.
For the institution, the address to print is almost always the .co.uk. It costs under a third of .school and under a fifth of .university, every year, for as long as the organisation exists, and it is what a parent types without thinking. Buy an education extension alongside it where the word earns its keep, not instead of it.
The teaching words are not interchangeable. .school and .schule are the same word in English and German, so .schule only pays off if you teach in German. .academy has escaped schooling altogether and now belongs to football clubs and corporate learning programmes as much as to classrooms, although in England it also names a type of state school, which helps an academy trust and muddles everyone else. .training sits closest to what buyers type, because people search for the ticket they need rather than the organisation issuing it. .education names the sector rather than the teaching, which fits a supplier or a membership body better than a classroom.
The rest are narrower than they look. .institute reads as research or standards. .science names a field, not a course. .wiki describes a format, so it works better as a documentation site beside the main address than as the main address. .shiksha is the Hindi and Sanskrit word for education, and it says nothing to a British parent while costing near the top of this list.
What we would suggest
-
A first aid or plant machinery trainer
.trainingBuyers search for the ticket rather than the trainer, so the word after the dot repeats the phrase they already typed. It also survives a change of syllabus: add SIA or CPD courses next year and the address still describes the business.
-
A martial arts club or football coaching set-up
.academyAcademy is already the word on the door and the kit bag, so brand.academy reads as the name of the place rather than as a web address. Away from schooling nobody hears any claim about legal status in it.
-
An independent language or music school
.schoolThe obvious descriptive .co.uk names in both those markets went years ago, and .school hands the descriptive name back. Unlike .academy it carries no second meaning inside the English state system, so it never has to be explained.
-
An edtech supplier selling into schools
.educationYou are not teaching anybody, so the classroom words overclaim on your behalf. .education names the sector you sell into, which is how a procurement lead describes the budget line your invoice comes out of.
-
A CPD provider or professional standards body
.instituteInstitute carries a standards-setting weight that .academy and .training do not, and it is one of the cheapest extensions here, so a small membership body can hold it for a decade without an annual argument about the renewal.
-
A research group or science outreach project
.scienceIt is the only extension in this category that names a field of study instead of a teaching relationship, which suits a lab, a citizen-science project or a schools outreach programme that is not selling courses to anybody.

Mistakes we see with education domains
Worth reading before you register, because most of these cost money to undo.
-
Assuming a .sch.uk can be bought like any other domain. Nominet keeps that zone for schools use only, the name has to follow the schoolname.area.sch.uk pattern from Nominet's own local authority zone list, and your registrar has to send Nominet a signed request on the school's letterhead before it is approved.
Do this insteadLet the school's IT supplier or local authority handle the .sch.uk application, and register a .co.uk here for everything the school runs itself: the PTA site, a fundraising page, a sixth form open day. 365i does not sell .sch.uk.
-
Reading brand.university or brand.institute as permission to use the word. Companies House lists both University and Institute among the sensitive words needing prior approval before you can use them in a company or business name, and approval for Institute normally goes only to established research bodies or professional bodies of the highest standing.
Do this insteadCheck the Companies House sensitive words guidance before you build a brand on either word. If approval is unlikely, .academy and .training carry no such condition and both cost less to renew.
-
Waiting for a .edu, or believing one of these extensions is its UK equivalent. .edu runs under a cooperative agreement between the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration and EDUCAUSE, and NTIA describes it as generally restricted to use by postsecondary institutions. Every extension in this category is open to anyone, which means none of them proves anything about you.
Do this insteadPut the proof where it does the work: the awarding body, your centre number and the accreditation logo on the page itself, with a link a parent or an employer can check independently.
-
Making a premium education extension the institution's permanent address. Whoever renews it in five years is a business manager holding a spending review, with no memory of why the extension was picked and a renewal line they cannot defend against a .co.uk costing a fifth as much.
Do this insteadKeep the institution on the .co.uk and spend the education extension on something with a shorter life: one course, an open day, a fundraising appeal, a new department that needs its own front door.
-
Forgetting that a school address gets read aloud at parents' evening, printed on a letter home and typed one-handed on a phone in a car park. .schule and .shiksha have to be spelled out letter by letter to a British audience, every single time.
Do this insteadSay the whole address out loud to somebody who has never seen it written down. If they ask you to repeat it, pick a shorter word or go back to the .co.uk.
-
Registering the education extension and leaving the matching .co.uk on the shelf. Parents, students and employers type .co.uk out of habit, and sooner or later somebody else registers the one that matches your name and starts collecting your traffic.
Do this insteadRegister both at the same time and point the .co.uk at the same site. It is the cheapest thing in this category by a distance, and it is the address people guess when they have half-remembered your name.

Education Domains FAQ
Yes. Education domain extensions like .school, .academy, and .education are open to all registrants. There are no requirements to be an accredited institution. However, state schools in the UK typically use .sch.uk domains provided through Jisc.
The .academy extension is one of the most versatile education domains. It works equally well for formal academies, professional training providers, coaching businesses, and online course platforms. It conveys a structured, professional approach to learning.
Absolutely. Education domains are ideal for online learning platforms and course websites. An address like yourcourses.academy or yoursubject.training clearly communicates the educational nature of your content and can improve click-through rates.
A relevant domain extension contributes to your overall professional image. Whilst it is not a substitute for accreditation or quality content, an education-specific domain signals that your primary purpose is teaching and learning, which builds trust with prospective students.
The .wiki extension is designed for knowledge bases, collaborative encyclopaedias, documentation sites, and community-edited resources. It is not affiliated with Wikipedia but follows the same spirit of open, accessible information sharing.
No, 365i does not sell .sch.uk. Nominet keeps that zone for schools use only and runs it through a separate process: the name has to follow the schoolname.area.sch.uk pattern taken from Nominet's own local authority zone list, and the registrar has to send Nominet a signed request on school letterhead giving the school name, its ID number, the postal address and a named contact before anything is approved. Schools in Northern Ireland apply to the Education Authority for a ni.sch.uk name instead. Anything the school runs for itself, from the PTA site to a fundraising page, sits perfectly well on a .co.uk registered here in minutes.
.edu is an American arrangement, not an international education extension. It runs under a cooperative agreement between the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration and EDUCAUSE, and NTIA describes it as established for educational institutions and generally restricted to use by postsecondary institutions. No ordinary registrar sells it. The nearest UK equivalent is .ac.uk, which Nominet has delegated to Jisc Services Ltd as trustee for higher and further education and research institutions, and that sits outside the normal registrar channel too. Everything in this category is open instead: no gatekeeping, and no borrowed authority either.
Rarely, and the price is the smaller of the two problems. It is the dearest extension in this category, more than five times a .co.uk every year, and Companies House lists University among the sensitive words that need prior approval before you can use them in a company or business name. A recognised university already has a .ac.uk address that staff and students know, so a .university adds an address to maintain rather than a better one. If you are not one, the extension will not make you one. Where the word is doing marketing work on a corporate learning programme, .academy costs less and asks less of you.
