What a .education domain proves, and what it cannot
The useful thing about .education is that it describes a sector rather than an institution. That makes it a better fit for the organisations around the edges of teaching than for schools themselves: an ed-tech supplier, a publisher, a curriculum consultancy, an examinations service, a charity working with schools, a CPD provider. All of those serve education without being a school, and none are well described by .academy or .school.
What it does not do is prove anything. It is a generic extension, delegated on 19 December 2013 and operated today by Binky Moon, LLC, part of Identity Digital. There is no accreditation test, no inspection, no charity registration and no check that you have ever taught anybody. Anyone in any country can register one. Set that against .edu, which IANA records as a sponsored top-level domain administered by EDUCAUSE since 1985, where the sponsor decides who qualifies.
Length is the other thing to weigh. Education is nine letters, so the full address runs long wherever it is printed, read aloud or typed into a school filtering system. Survivable for an organisation with a short name, awkward for one without.

.education vs .co.uk: which should you register?
For anything sold into UK schools this is the real decision, and the two extensions answer different questions. .education says what field you are in. .co.uk says which country you are in, and Google treats that as a targeting signal in a way it never does for a generic extension.
.co.uk is the better single choice for a UK supplier: cheaper each year, guessed correctly by procurement staff and parents alike, and moved between registrars near instantly because a .uk transfer is an IPS tag change rather than a registry transfer. .education is the better brand address, and it works well pointing at a .co.uk site or carrying a product sold beyond the UK. Owning both and redirecting one removes the question, and it is what most suppliers settle on.

.academy suits a provider that enrols learners onto a specific programme, and .education suits an organisation working around the sector. The distinction is real rather than marketing: a bootcamp with cohorts and a syllabus reads as an academy, while a publisher, an awarding body or an ed-tech supplier reads as education. If both fit, the shorter one wins on practical grounds, because academy is seven letters against nine, and every printed reference carries that difference.
No more than any other generic extension, which is to say not by itself. Google gives no ranking weight to keywords in a top-level domain, and reads .education as carrying no geography. A UK school competing for searches from local parents is better served by an extension Google reads as British. What actually moves those rankings is the school's own content, a Google Business Profile with correct details, and links from local organisations, none of which depend on the domain you picked.
Yes, though a school address is one of the worst to change casually. It sits in parents' contacts, on staff email, on signage, in local authority records, and inside filtering systems that may allow the old domain and not the new one. If you go ahead, keep the old domain registered indefinitely and 301 redirect it rather than letting it lapse, and expect that to run for years.
