Where .viajes fits against .es and Latin American ccTLDs

.viajes is the Spanish plural of viaje, a trip or a journey, and it is one of the earliest new extensions in the root zone, delegated to Binky Moon on 12 December 2013. Nothing about it is restricted. No Spanish address, no Spanish company, no obligation to publish a word of Spanish.

The awkward number is the price. A .viajes is £45.49 a year here. A .es is £11.99. So the national extension that Spanish customers already recognise, and that Google reads as a country signal for Spain, costs roughly a quarter of the pan-Hispanic one that almost nobody has met before. Latin America presents the same problem in a dozen versions at once, because .mx, .ar, .cl and .co are all established in their own markets and a generic Spanish word has to compete with every one of them.

Where it does work is where no single national extension fits. A tour operator selling across Spain, Mexico and Colombia cannot pick one country code without looking foreign in the other two, and .viajes is neutral ground. That is a real use for it, and it is a narrow one.

The honest answer

Is .viajes the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.viajes works well if

  • You sell across several Spanish-speaking countries at once, so no single national extension fits without looking foreign in the others.
  • You want a Spanish-language sub-brand kept clearly apart from an English main site, with the language declared in the address itself.
  • The .es or the local country code you wanted has gone, and a descriptive Spanish word beats a hyphen or a padded name.

Look elsewhere if

  • You sell into one country. A .es at £11.99 is a quarter of the price and Google reads it as a Spanish country signal, which .viajes cannot give.
  • The site is in English. A Spanish word in the address leading to English pages reads as a marketing decision rather than a welcome.
  • Recognition. Spanish-speaking travellers have decades of habit with .es, .com and their own national extensions, and will type one of those by mistake.

Selling mainly in Spain? The .es is a quarter of the price and carries the country signal that .viajes does not. See .es pricing.

Head to head

.viajes vs .es: which should you register?

.es is £11.99 a year here and .viajes is £45.49. The cheaper one is also the one Spanish customers already recognise and the one Google treats as a country target, so for a single-market site this is not a close call.

.viajes only earns its money when the market is plural. A business trading across Spain and Latin America has no neutral country code to reach for, and a Spanish word belonging to no country is a reasonable answer to that. Even then, most operators run the .es or the local extension in each market and keep the .viajes as the group address, which leaves the country signals where they do some good.

What people ask us before registering a .viajes domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

No. .viajes is a generic extension operated by Binky Moon and open to anyone in any country, with no Spanish residency, no Spanish company registration and no language obligation. A travel firm in Kettering can register one this afternoon. The flip side is that the extension says nothing about where you are or what language you publish in, so if you want Spanish-speaking customers to know they are in the right place, the pages have to say it. The domain will not do that job on its own.

For a business trading in Spain, .es wins on both counts. It costs £11.99 a year here against £45.49 for .viajes, and Google treats country-code extensions as a strong signal about the audience a site is meant for, which .viajes cannot provide. .es is also the address Spanish customers expect. .viajes makes sense when you sell across Spain and Latin America together and no single country code would be right in every market, or when the .es you wanted has already gone.

Rarely, and only for a specific shape of business. At £45.49 against £11.99 you are paying roughly £34 a year, or £340 a decade, for a word that carries no search advantage and no country targeting. That is defensible for a group brand trading across several Spanish-speaking markets where picking one national extension would be a political statement in the others. It is poor value for a single agency in Madrid or Buenos Aires, where the national extension is cheaper, better recognised and more use in search.
