About Zencart

What is Zencart?

Zen Cart is a free, open-source ecommerce platform written in PHP, GPL-licensed, and originally forked from osCommerce in 2003. It predates WooCommerce, PrestaShop, and OpenCart, and remains in active maintenance with a small but dedicated developer community.

The platform handles products, categories, customer accounts, orders, shipping, taxes, discounts, gift certificates, and newsletters out of the box. Storefronts are templated and a third-party module library covers payment gateways, shipping integrations, and feature add-ons. Multi-currency and basic multi-language support are included, and the responsive Themita-style templates handle modern mobile breakpoints when used.

Zen Cart runs on a standard LAMP stack with PHP and MySQL or MariaDB. The codebase is older in style than newer carts, with limited use of namespaces and Composer, but it is stable, predictable, and has the lowest hosting requirements of any UK-relevant PHP cart in 2026.

Our take

365i’s editorial review of Zencart

Zen Cart is the oldest PHP shopping cart we still actively host. It was forked from osCommerce in 2003, predates WooCommerce by eight years, predates PrestaShop by four, and the codebase shows it. Procedural PHP, custom templating, and an admin interface that has been stylistically updated over the years but still has the bones of a 2005 application.

And yet, every single Zen Cart shop I host has been on Zen Cart for a long time, makes money on Zen Cart, and has zero appetite to change. That tells you something about the platform that the surface impression doesn't.

"I would not start a new shop on Zen Cart in 2026. But every Zen Cart shop I host is profitable, has been running for over a decade, and has no good reason to migrate. Both of those things are true."

Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting

Where it works well: hosting footprint is tiny, so it runs on cheaper plans than any modern cart. The catalogue and order flow are stable. Updates are predictable, and the kind of "we shipped a major version, now half your plugins are broken" experience common with WooCommerce is much rarer here. The community forum is genuinely active and is the place I would point any Zen Cart shopowner with a custom-template question.

Where it shows its age: the admin UI is functional but dated, and theming a Zen Cart shop to look genuinely 2026-modern takes real effort. The plugin marketplace is a fraction of WooCommerce or PrestaShop's, and many of the surviving plugins are themselves a decade old (some still work fine, some don't). Composer is not part of the picture. Hiring a Zen Cart developer in the UK in 2026 is harder than hiring a WooCommerce one, full stop.

Hosting-side, Zen Cart is one of the easiest carts we run. PHP 8.5, MySQL 8, our optimisation panel, and free SSL is all most shops need. We have customers who have been on Zen Cart for fifteen years on the same install, with a careful upgrade history, and the shop just runs.

If you are a long-running Zen Cart shop, do not feel pressured to migrate. Move to a host that knows the platform, keep your Zen Cart and PHP versions current, and the shop will keep doing what it has always done. If you are starting a new ecommerce project in 2026, look at WooCommerce or PrestaShop first.

Where Zencart Fits

Best for

Long-established UK retailers running a Zen Cart shop that already earns its keep, particularly small to medium independents with up to a few thousand SKUs and a stable catalogue. Strong fit where the cost and risk of migrating to WooCommerce or PrestaShop is greater than the upside. Runs comfortably on our standard web hosting plan with PHP 8.5, MySQL 8, and the gd plus curl extensions enabled.

Watch for

Zen Cart is showing its age. The admin UI is dated, the plugin marketplace is roughly a tenth the size of WooCommerce, and many surviving Zen Cart plugins are themselves a decade old. Hiring a Zen Cart developer in 2026 is harder than hiring a WooCommerce one, so factor in either an in-house owner or a known supplier before committing. Do not start a new ecommerce project on Zen Cart unless you have a specific reason it suits you.

A Zencart case from our books

An East-Anglian specialist parts retailer running a roughly 2,200-SKU Zen Cart shop (in continuous operation since 2009) came to us in mid-2025 after their previous host moved them to a new platform image that pinned PHP at 7.2 and broke a custom shipping module. They had been profitable on Zen Cart for sixteen years and were not interested in migrating to WooCommerce mid-trading-year.

We migrated the shop to our standard web hosting plan at £5.99 a month, upgraded Zen Cart from 1.5.5 to 1.5.8 and PHP to 8.3 in one careful pass on a staging URL, fixed the custom shipping module against the newer Zen Cart API, and turned on our optimisation panel. Storefront page response dropped from around 1.2 seconds to around 380 ms, and admin save times on bulk price updates went from roughly six seconds to under two. They turned over approximately £41,000 over the following Christmas trading window without a single timeout.

What we would tell anyone in the same spot: do the platform and PHP upgrade in one careful pass on staging, not piecemeal in production. And do not migrate platforms in October.

Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.

Hosting eCommerce apps

What we look for in ecommerce hosting

Hosting an ecommerce app well is rarely about raw CPU. It is about three things we end up tuning for almost every shop: PHP memory limits high enough to handle bulk product imports, a database engine sized for the read-heavy mix of catalogue browsing, and reliable cron plus SSL for whichever payment gateway the shop uses. We give all of that out of the box on our web hosting plans, but we will also tell you honestly when an app is ill-suited to shared hosting and a small managed cloud server would save everyone pain.

FAQ

Zencart Hosting FAQ

Common questions we hear from people running Zencart on our hosting.

Zen Cart 1.5.8 and 2.x need PHP 7.4 or higher (PHP 8.1+ recommended for current branches), MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.x, and the gd, curl, mbstring, and zip PHP extensions. We host every plan on PHP 8.5 by default with all of those extensions enabled, so a current Zen Cart release installs cleanly without any environment tweaks.

Zen Cart is a one-click install on our web hosting plans. From the My365i control panel, open Software Installer, search for Zen Cart, pick the domain you want it on, and click Install. The installer creates the database, drops the files into place, and walks you through the initial admin setup. You then add your store details, payment gateways, and shipping rules through the admin panel.

For new shops, almost certainly not. WooCommerce, PrestaShop, and AbanteCart all have larger plugin libraries, more modern admin interfaces, and far bigger developer communities. Zen Cart makes sense in two specific cases: you already run a long-standing Zen Cart shop with a working catalogue and you do not want to migrate platforms during a busy trading year, or you have unusual product workflows that map cleanly to Zen Cart and would need expensive custom development on a newer cart.

Yes, and we will do it for you free of charge on any of our hosting plans. We move the Zen Cart files, the database, the images directory, and any custom modules or templates. We test the migrated shop on a staging URL with the payment gateways in sandbox mode before pointing your domain across, so you can verify checkout, customer login, and order flow before going live. Most migrations finish within a working day with no downtime.

Our support covers the hosting platform: PHP and MySQL configuration, SSL, backups, cron, mail flow, and migrations. For Zen Cart-specific work like custom template development, payment gateway debugging, or upgrading between major versions, we will help where we can but do not act as your Zen Cart developer. The Zen Cart community forum is genuinely active and is the right first stop for application-specific questions.

The current 1.5.8 and 2.x branches are actively maintained and receive regular security patches, so a current Zen Cart install on a modern PHP version is not inherently less secure than a current WooCommerce or PrestaShop install. The risk lies in old installs: Zen Cart shops running 1.3.x or unpatched 1.5.x branches on PHP 5.6 or 7.0 are common and are genuinely insecure. If you are migrating to us with an old version, the migration is the right time to upgrade Zen Cart and PHP together rather than carrying the legacy forward.

WooCommerce wins on plugin choice, theme variety, developer hiring pool, and admin polish. Zen Cart wins on hosting footprint (it runs comfortably on cheaper plans), predictability (fewer moving parts, fewer breaking updates), and operational maturity for shops that have been running on it for ten or fifteen years. For a new UK shop in 2026, WooCommerce or PrestaShop is the easier recommendation. For an established Zen Cart shop with a working catalogue, staying on Zen Cart is usually right.
