About OpenCart

What is OpenCart?

OpenCart is a free, open-source ecommerce platform written in PHP and licensed under GPLv3. First released in 2010 by Daniel Kerr, it runs on MySQL or MariaDB and is built around a model-view-controller architecture that keeps templates, business logic, and data access separate. OpenCart 4.x is the current major release line.

The admin panel handles products, options, manufacturers, customers, orders, returns, taxes, and a multi-store mode that lets a single OpenCart install drive multiple branded storefronts from one product catalogue. Multi-currency, multi-language, and customer groups are core features. Discount and coupon engines, abandoned-cart reminders, and customer reviews are built in.

OpenCart extends through a marketplace of paid and free extensions covering payment gateways, shipping integrations, themes, and SEO tools. The codebase is fully open-source for developers who need to modify or build custom modules. It runs on a standard LAMP or LEMP stack and integrates with most UK and European payment gateways.

Our take

365i’s editorial review of OpenCart

OpenCart is one of the platforms I have a complicated relationship with. The vendor copy says it is flexible and feature-rich, which is true. What it does not say is that the extension marketplace is enormous and varies wildly in quality, and the experience of running an OpenCart shop is largely determined by which paid extensions you commit to early.

I see OpenCart picked by two kinds of shop owners. The first is the technically-minded UK independent who tried Shopify, balked at the monthly cost plus per-extension fees, and wanted a self-hosted platform with predictable hosting bills. The second is the agency or developer building shops for clients, who likes OpenCart's MVC structure and template hierarchy because it is genuinely pleasant to extend if you know PHP.

Where it shines: multi-store mode is the killer feature. A single install can run three branded storefronts off the same product catalogue with different prices, different themes, and different domains. WooCommerce needs a multisite gymnastics setup to do that. PrestaShop has it but charges for some of the features. OpenCart gives you it in core. The catalogue model is also more sophisticated than WooCommerce's product post-type, with proper option handling for variants without the awkwardness WooCommerce has on complex products.

"The OpenCart marketplace is both its biggest strength and its biggest trap. The good extensions are excellent. The bad ones will mangle your database and take a careful restore to undo. Vet anything you install before it touches a live shop, especially if it is paid."

Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting

Where it's annoying: the marketplace is unmoderated for quality and you can find ten different extensions doing the same job at ten different price points with ten different code qualities. Upgrades between minor versions can break extensions silently, leaving you with admin pages that load blank or report errors only when you try to save. The default themes are dated. Documentation has improved in OpenCart 4 but is still patchier than WooCommerce or PrestaShop.

Hosting-stack notes: OpenCart 4 wants PHP 8.0 or higher and MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10.4+. It is lighter than PrestaShop and roughly comparable to WooCommerce on a quiet shop, but heavier once you start stacking marketplace extensions. We set 512 MB of PHP memory by default for OpenCart sites because some of the popular bulk-import extensions will exhaust 256 MB on catalogues over a few thousand SKUs. Cron is needed for abandoned-cart and stock-sync extensions, which we set up at the server level rather than relying on the application's own scheduler.

If you want a self-hosted shop with native multi-store, predictable hosting costs, and you have the technical confidence to vet extensions properly, OpenCart is a sound pick. If you want a shop that mostly takes care of itself with a curated extension set, look at WooCommerce or AbanteCart instead.

Where OpenCart Fits

Best for

UK independents running multiple storefronts from a single catalogue, where OpenCart's native multi-store mode saves the hosting and licensing cost of running parallel installs. Technically-confident shop owners who left Shopify because of the per-feature pricing model. Agencies building bespoke shops for clients on a self-hosted stack. Catalogues from a few hundred up to roughly 8,000 SKUs run well on our standard web hosting plan with PHP memory raised to 512 MB.

Watch for

The extension marketplace has no quality floor and paid extensions can be of wildly different quality at similar prices. Vet every paid extension by checking its update history and the developer's other listings before you commit. Minor-version upgrades occasionally break extensions silently, so always take a fresh backup, run the upgrade in a staging environment first, and test the admin and checkout flow before going live.

An OpenCart case from our books

A west-Midlands homewares retailer running three brand storefronts (a contemporary brand, a traditional brand, and a clearance outlet) came to us in late 2024. They had been running the three brands as three separate Magento 1 installs, which had been end-of-life since 2020 and was costing them in maintenance hours and server resources. They had around 3,200 SKUs total and turnover of roughly £45k a month across the three brands.

We migrated them onto a single OpenCart 4 install in multi-store mode on our Turbo plan. Three storefronts, three themes, three domains, one catalogue. We tuned PHP memory to 512 MB, set up real server cron for the abandoned-cart and stock-sync jobs, and turned on CDN pre-caching. The admin save time on a 3,000 SKU catalogue dropped from 9 seconds on Magento to under 2 on OpenCart. They saved roughly £180 a month in hosting and stopped paying a Magento agency for security patches.

What we'd tell anyone in the same spot: if you are running multiple brands, do not run multiple installs. OpenCart's multi-store mode is genuinely well-built and most agencies will not even bring it up because it does not pad the bill.

Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.

Hosting eCommerce apps

What we look for in ecommerce hosting

Hosting an ecommerce app well is rarely about raw CPU. It is about three things we end up tuning for almost every shop: PHP memory limits high enough to handle bulk product imports, a database engine sized for the read-heavy mix of catalogue browsing, and reliable cron plus SSL for whichever payment gateway the shop uses. We give all of that out of the box on our web hosting plans, but we will also tell you honestly when an app is ill-suited to shared hosting and a small managed cloud server would save everyone pain.

FAQ

OpenCart Hosting FAQ

Common questions we hear from people running OpenCart on our hosting.

OpenCart 4 needs PHP 8.0 or higher (we recommend 8.1 or 8.2), MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10.4+, and the standard PHP extensions for image handling, cURL, JSON, mbstring, ZIP, and GD. We host every plan on PHP 8.5 by default with all required extensions enabled. We set 512 MB of PHP memory for OpenCart sites by default because bulk-import and stock-sync extensions can exhaust 256 MB on busier catalogues.

OpenCart is a one-click install on our web hosting plans. From My365i, open Software Installer, search for OpenCart, pick the domain you want it on, set the admin credentials, and click Install. The installer creates the database, drops the files into place, sets file permissions, and emails the login. The whole process takes under a minute. If you want to start from a backup of an existing OpenCart shop, ask us and we will migrate it across for free.

Catalogues up to a few thousand SKUs running normal traffic levels are fine on our standard web hosting plan. Our Turbo plan, with NVMe storage and CDN pre-caching, handles busier shops comfortably. Once you are processing thousands of orders a month, running a multi-store setup with several active storefronts, or doing regular bulk imports, a small managed cloud server gives you dedicated resources and predictable performance. We will look at your traffic and SKU count and suggest the right tier honestly.

Yes, and it is one of the platform's best features. A single OpenCart install can drive multiple branded storefronts on different domains, each with its own theme, currency, language, prices, and product visibility, all sharing one product catalogue and one admin login. We migrate clients away from running three or four separate ecommerce installs onto a single OpenCart multi-store regularly, and the saving in hosting cost and maintenance time is significant.

Our support covers the hosting platform, PHP and MySQL tuning, SSL, backups, and migrations. We will help diagnose extension conflicts and broken upgrades when we can, but we are not your OpenCart theme developer or your paid-extension support contact. For custom module work or deep theme customisation, we recommend specialist OpenCart developers and look after the hosting end of the relationship.

Yes, free of charge on every plan. We move the OpenCart files, the database, the image directory, and any custom modules. Most migrations finish within a working day with no downtime, and we test the site on a staging URL before pointing your domain across. If you are also upgrading from OpenCart 2 or 3 to OpenCart 4 as part of the move, we factor that in and do the version upgrade in staging before going live.

OpenCart itself releases security patches and you should apply them promptly. On the hosting side we provide free SSL, daily backups, brute-force protection on the admin login, modern PHP with security updates, and our optimisation panel can block known bad bots before they hit the application. The most common OpenCart compromises we see are through outdated paid extensions left installed long after the developer abandoned them, so audit your extension list at least twice a year and remove anything you no longer use.
