About WordPress

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a free, open-source content management system written in PHP and licensed under GPLv2, first released in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little as a fork of b2/cafelog. It is now used by roughly 43% of all websites on the public web and is maintained by the WordPress Foundation along with thousands of contributors and a large commercial ecosystem.

The core software ships with a block-based editor, REST API, multisite mode, role-based user management, and a media library. Functionality is extended through themes and plugins, with over 60,000 plugins available in the official directory. WooCommerce, the leading WordPress ecommerce plugin, is itself open-source and powers a significant share of UK independent shops.

WordPress runs on a standard LAMP or LEMP stack and supports MySQL 5.7 or higher, MariaDB 10.4 or higher, and PHP 7.4 onwards, with PHP 8.1+ recommended for modern plugin compatibility.

Our take

365i’s editorial review of WordPress

I've been hosting WordPress since the b2/cafelog fork days, and I've shipped my own plugins to the wordpress.org directory under the 365i name. So the bias is honest: WordPress is the platform we know best, and most of our hosting stack is tuned for it. We have a Turbo plan tier specifically for higher-traffic WordPress sites, and our optimisation panel exposes 40 toggles that map directly onto the things that make WordPress slow if you leave them at default.

The thing about WordPress that the vendor copy never quite says out loud: the experience you get is almost entirely a function of which plugins you pick and which host you put it on. The same install on a cheap reseller box and on a tuned cloud node feels like two different products. We see both ends of that range every week.

Where it shines: the block editor has finally settled down. Authors who fought it in 2019 are productive in it now. Custom post types, taxonomies, and the REST API give you a genuinely flexible content backbone, so we see WordPress being used as a headless CMS for Next.js front-ends as often as we see it driving traditional themes. Permalinks, media handling, and user roles are all sensible defaults out of the box.

"WordPress is only as good as the plugins you put in it. We've spent more support hours rescuing sites from a single badly-written page-builder plugin than from any flaw in core, and that's the thing nobody warns new owners about."

Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting

Where it's annoying: the plugin economy is a double-edged sword. The good plugins are excellent. The bad ones are catastrophic, and they all install with the same blue button. Page builders, in particular, can turn a fast site into a 6-second slog overnight. We routinely see sites with 60+ active plugins that would run faster with 12. The auto-update model is mostly good, but a careless dependency update can take a site offline at 3am, which is why our daily backups are a firm policy rather than an upsell.

Hosting-stack notes: WordPress wants PHP 8.1 or 8.2 minimum on anything modern, opcache enabled, MySQL with InnoDB, and at least 256 MB of PHP memory before WooCommerce gets involved (we set 512 MB by default). It benefits enormously from object caching when you have a busy site, and our optimisation panel handles that without you needing to install Redis yourself. WP-Cron should be replaced with a real server cron on any site doing more than light traffic. We do that automatically on the Turbo plan.

If you're starting a content site, a brochure site, a small shop, or a membership community, WordPress is the safe answer. If you've outgrown shared hosting because of plugin bloat, the fix is usually a smaller plugin set on better hosting, not a different CMS. We'll tell you that honestly even though we'd be happy to sell you a bigger plan.

Where WordPress Fits

Best for

UK content sites, brochure sites, membership communities, and independent shops up to roughly 5,000 SKUs running WooCommerce. Authors who want a serious editorial workflow get good mileage from the block editor and custom post types. Sites doing more than around 50,000 monthly visits, or running WooCommerce with frequent stock imports, benefit from our Turbo plan with NVMe storage and CDN pre-caching rather than the entry tier.

Watch for

Plugin selection is the single biggest determinant of performance and security, and the marketplace has no quality floor. Page builders especially can balloon a site from one second to six. Audit your plugin list at least twice a year and remove anything you no longer use. Auto-updates are mostly safe but a bad release can break a site overnight, which is why daily backups are non-negotiable rather than nice-to-have.

A WordPress case from our books

A south-east professional services firm with around 220 pages and a busy news section came to us in early 2025 after their previous host kept choking on the WP admin during peak hours. They were running 47 active plugins, including two competing caching plugins fighting each other, and PHP memory capped at 128 MB. The site was taking 4.8 seconds to load on mobile and the Posts list took 11 seconds to render in wp-admin.

We migrated them to our Turbo plan free of charge, audited the plugins down to 23, switched off the redundant cache layer, raised PHP memory to 512 MB, and turned on object caching through our optimisation panel. Mobile load time dropped to 1.3 seconds and the admin Posts list returned in under two. Their bounce rate dropped about 22% over the following month according to their own analytics.

What we'd tell anyone in the same spot: a slow WordPress site is almost never a WordPress problem. It's a plugin problem and a hosting problem. Fix those and the platform stops being the villain.

Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.

Hosting CMS apps

What we look for in cms hosting

A content management system is a long-term tenant on your hosting, not a quick install. We tune for what CMSs actually do day to day: an opcache configured to survive plugin and theme upgrades, PHP memory at 256MB or higher because page builders chew through it, daily backups that include the uploads directory and not just the database, and free SSL enforced from day one. We also keep an honest opinion about which CMS suits which site and will tell you when something would run better elsewhere.

FAQ

WordPress Hosting FAQ

Common questions we hear from people running WordPress on our hosting.

WordPress core officially supports PHP 7.4 or higher, but we recommend PHP 8.1 or 8.2 for modern plugin compatibility. It needs MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10.4+, with InnoDB tables, plus the standard PHP extensions for image manipulation, cURL, JSON, mbstring, and ZIP. Every 365i plan ships with PHP 8.5 by default, the right extensions, and 256 MB of PHP memory minimum. We raise that to 512 MB on WooCommerce sites without needing to ask.

WordPress is a one-click install in the My365i control panel. Open Software Installer, search for WordPress, pick the domain you want to install on, set an admin username and password, and click Install. The installer creates the database, drops the files into place, sets file permissions, and emails you the login. It takes less than a minute. If you want to start from a migration of an existing site instead, ask us and we will do the move for free.

Most WordPress sites do fine on our standard web hosting plan. Our Turbo plan, with NVMe storage and CDN pre-caching, handles WooCommerce and busy editorial sites comfortably up to roughly 50,000 monthly visits. Beyond that, or for sites running heavy plugin stacks, a small managed cloud server gives you dedicated CPU and predictable performance during traffic spikes. We will look at your actual visitor numbers and plugin list and tell you honestly which tier fits.

Both, within reason. Our team has been running WordPress since the early days and we ship our own plugins to wordpress.org under the 365i name. We will help with hosting-side issues, plugin diagnosis, performance tuning, security cleanups, and broken updates. We are not your theme designer or your custom plugin developer for bespoke features, but we will tell you which plugin is breaking your site and fix it where we can.

Yes, free of charge on every hosting plan. We move the files, the database, the uploads directory, and any custom configuration. Most migrations finish within a working day with no downtime, and we test the site on a staging URL before pointing your domain across. If you are migrating from a host that has locked the site behind a custom panel, we will work with you to get a backup out before we start.

Security is mostly about staying current. We provide free SSL, daily backups, brute-force protection on wp-login, modern PHP versions, and our optimisation panel can block known bad bots before they hit the application. On your end, the most important habits are running PHP 8.1+, keeping core, themes, and plugins updated, removing plugins you no longer use, and using strong admin passwords with two-factor authentication. We will help with cleanups if a site does get compromised.

There is no fixed number, but in practice anything past 25 starts to need careful attention and anything past 40 usually has at least three plugins that could be removed without anyone noticing. The right question is not how many but how heavy. A single page builder loaded across the whole site can do more damage than 30 small utility plugins combined. We audit plugin lists for clients on request and will flag the ones that are dragging the site down.
