What is Roundcube?
Roundcube is a browser-based IMAP webmail client first released in 2008. It is licensed under the GPL and remains the most widely deployed self-hosted webmail interface in 2026. The platform runs on PHP and uses a relational database (MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL or SQLite) for user preferences, address books, and identities. Mail itself is read directly from any standard IMAP server.
The interface uses a three-pane layout familiar from desktop mail clients, with drag-and-drop message handling, threaded conversation views, full-text search, attachment preview, calendar plug-ins, and a plug-in API that supports two-factor authentication, encryption helpers, and folder management add-ons.
Roundcube ships as the default webmail interface on a wide range of hosting control panels including cPanel, Plesk, and 20i StackCP. The 365i one-click installer is for owners who want a standalone Roundcube install of their own, separate from the control panel webmail, often as a customer-facing mail interface for a SaaS or membership site.
365i’s editorial review of Roundcube
Roundcube is the webmail client almost everyone has used at some point, even if they didn't know its name. If you've logged into webmail through your hosting control panel in the last fifteen years, you've probably seen Roundcube. It's the default on most cPanel and Plesk setups, including ours, and the standalone version is what people install when they want a customer-facing webmail interface that doesn't look like a control panel.
What works well: the three-pane layout is intuitive for anyone who's used Outlook or Thunderbird, IMAP support is solid, the plug-in ecosystem covers two-factor auth, calendar, contacts, and message encryption, and the project has been in steady development since 2008. New releases ship regularly, security fixes are timely, and the codebase is clean enough that we've been able to debug obscure customer issues without too much pain.
What's annoying: the default theme has aged. Roundcube ships with the Larry skin and a newer Elastic skin, and Elastic is much better, but the install defaults still trip some people up. The plug-in directory is scattered across GitHub repos and the project's own site, so finding well-maintained plug-ins takes some hunting. And the calendar plug-in, while good, requires a bit of setup work to integrate with CalDAV servers.
"Roundcube is the boring webmail client that just works. Twenty years from now, when most of today's mail apps have been acquired and shut down, Roundcube will still be here, still rendering messages in three panes, still letting you ignore the latest AI-driven email assistant. That is high praise."

On hosting: Roundcube runs cleanly on our shared hosting from £5.99/mo. PHP 8.5 is fine, the MySQL footprint is tiny (preferences and address books only), and a typical install for a single user or small team uses well under 100MB of disk space, ignoring the IMAP store itself which lives on the mail server. We've never had a Roundcube install hit unlimited LVE resources, even on busy customer-facing deployments.
The thing to be careful with is session handling. Roundcube stores active sessions in the database by default, and on a busy install the sessions table can grow. The garbage collection cron job is included with our installer, but it's worth checking that it's actually running every few months, especially after upgrades.
If you want a customer-facing webmail interface (a membership site, a paid mail service, or a domain reseller setup), Roundcube is the right pick over building one yourself. Set the Elastic skin as default, configure the plug-ins for two-factor auth and password change, and brand the login page with your own logo. Most of the customisation is in config files and CSS overrides rather than core code edits, which keeps upgrades clean.
For most 365i customers who just want webmail, you don't need to install Roundcube manually because it's already available through the hosting control panel. The one-click installer is for people who specifically want a standalone, customisable, separately-branded Roundcube of their own.

Where Roundcube Fits
Best for
Owners who want a customer-facing or branded webmail interface separate from the hosting control panel. Membership sites, paid mail services, domain resellers, and small businesses where the control panel webmail is too generic. Also useful where two-factor authentication or specific plug-ins are needed beyond the control panel default.
Watch for
Default Larry skin looks dated; switch to Elastic on first install. Plug-in directory is scattered across multiple sources so finding well-maintained add-ons takes effort. Sessions table can grow if the garbage collection cron is misconfigured. Calendar plug-in needs CalDAV setup work to be useful. Standalone install duplicates what most control panels already provide.

A Roundcube case from our books
A regional professional services firm in the South East joined us in 2025 with around 18 staff mailboxes and a strong preference for browser-based mail with two-factor authentication. Their existing setup had no webmail two-factor option, and they were nervous after a phishing-led account takeover at a partner firm. Standard control panel webmail wasn't quite enough.
We installed standalone Roundcube on their shared hosting at £5.99/mo, set the Elastic skin as default, branded the login page with their logo, configured the two-factor authentication plug-in (TOTP via authenticator app), and connected it to their existing IMAP mailboxes hosted on our platform. We also enabled the password-change plug-in so staff could rotate passwords from inside webmail. Total setup time was around four working hours including testing on three different staff laptops.
Within a fortnight, every staff member had two-factor enabled, and the firm reported no further attempted account takeovers. They've since moved their public-facing client portal mail handling onto the same Roundcube install.
What we would tell anyone in the same spot: standalone Roundcube earns its install effort when you need branding or specific plug-ins. Otherwise, control panel webmail is fine.
Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.
What we look for in webmail client hosting
Webmail is mostly an IMAP client wrapped in a browser, so the hosting question is more about the IMAP server than the webmail PHP. We pair our webmail installs with a properly configured mail server, monitor IMAP latency, and tune the outbound SMTP path with proper SPF, DKIM, and DMARC so the messages your team sends from webmail reach inboxes rather than spam folders. Daily backups cover the configuration but, importantly, the mail itself lives on our mail platform with its own redundancy.

Beyond Webmail Client, our one-click installer covers 79 open-source PHP applications across 27 categories. A small selection from across the catalogue:
Roundcube Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running Roundcube on our hosting.
Roundcube runs on PHP 7.4 or later (PHP 8.1+ recommended for current releases) plus a database (MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL or SQLite). Our shared hosting includes PHP 8.5, MySQL 8, and 256MB PHP memory, all of which exceed Roundcube's needs. You also need an IMAP server, which can be your existing 365i mail server, an external IMAP host, or any IMAP-compliant service. Roundcube does not include a mail server itself, it's only the web interface.
Yes. Roundcube is in our application installer. The installer creates the database, drops in the files, and walks you through the IMAP server settings during first login. End to end, allow about 15 minutes for a fresh install. Note that Roundcube is also already available as the default webmail through your hosting control panel, so the one-click installer is mainly for owners who specifically want a standalone, customisable instance.
The control panel webmail uses Roundcube too, but it's integrated with the panel's authentication and styled to match. Standalone Roundcube is your own install: you control the theme, the URL, the plug-ins, the branding, and the user database. You can add two-factor authentication plug-ins, custom skins, and CalDAV calendar integration. It's the right pick for customer-facing webmail or any setup where the panel's default isn't enough.
We provide hosting-layer support 7 days a week with evenings, weekends, and bank holidays covered. That includes PHP, MySQL, IMAP server config, SSL, DNS, mail server troubleshooting, and migrations. We don't write custom Roundcube plug-ins or do bespoke skin development, that's development work. The Roundcube community has active forums and a GitHub project for application-specific issues. Mail server infrastructure is monitored 24/7 at the platform level.
Yes, included free with our migration service. Send us your current host's FTP details, the Roundcube config files, and a database export of the user preferences and address books table, and we'll move it across along with the IMAP mailboxes if those are also on your old host. Most Roundcube migrations take two to four working hours. We'll test login on a sample of accounts before we cut DNS, and we'll keep the old install accessible briefly in case anyone reports a missing folder.
Yes, with the right setup. Always run the latest stable Roundcube version, install the two-factor authentication plug-in (TOTP, U2F or both), enforce HTTPS on the login page (free SSL is included on every 365i plan), and keep PHP up to date. Our daily backups cover the database and the install, the platform-level WAF blocks common probing patterns, and we recommend additional fail2ban rules for repeated login attempts on the standalone admin URL.
