What is ZenPhoto CMS?
Zenphoto is a self-hosted photo CMS that's been around since 2005. It positions itself as a lightweight alternative to Piwigo and similar gallery platforms, with a focus on simplicity over feature breadth. The core feature set covers albums, sub-albums, photo metadata, EXIF display, comments, themes, basic page-content, and a search function.
It's written in PHP, uses MySQL or MariaDB for the database, supports PHP 8.3 in recent releases, and the storage model uses the filesystem for original images plus a database for metadata. That makes backup and migration straightforward and means the platform scales reasonably with disk space rather than database size.
In 2026, Zenphoto's development cadence has slowed compared to its peak years. Releases are infrequent, focused mainly on PHP version compatibility and security fixes rather than new features. It still works, it still hosts photos reliably, and it still has a small but loyal user base. For a personal photo gallery or a small photographer's portfolio that values simplicity over breadth, it's a credible choice. For a high-volume photo community, Piwigo is the more actively developed option.
365i’s editorial review of ZenPhoto CMS
Zenphoto is one of those applications I'd be honest about. The platform was sharper a decade ago than it is in 2026, and that's not a swipe at the maintainers; it's a statement about how the photo-management software world has changed. People who would have self-hosted a gallery 15 years ago now host on Smugmug, Flickr (still hanging on), Google Photos, or a custom Squarespace gallery. The remaining audience for self-hosted photo CMS is smaller, and Piwigo has captured most of it.
That said, Zenphoto isn't dead. It still gets occasional releases for PHP compatibility, the lightweight design means it runs cleanly on modest hosting, and the people who use it tend to know exactly why they chose it: minimal moving parts, no SaaS dependency, clear file/folder model on disk.
"Zenphoto in 2026 is software for photographers who want their library on their own server, who don't want a big platform between them and their photos, and who don't need real-time editing collaborations or AI tagging. It's deliberately small, and the people who use it value that. It's not the right tool for a high-traffic enthusiast community, but for a personal portfolio or a small photographer's archive, it's still doing useful work."
Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting
From a hosting perspective Zenphoto is light. The PHP footprint is modest, the database holds metadata rather than image binaries, and image processing happens on upload (using PHP-GD or ImageMagick to generate sized variants). A 365i shared plan at £5.99 handles a personal gallery with thousands of images comfortably. The thing that matters more than CPU is disk space, and we'd review your storage requirements as part of plan recommendation.
Honest hosting fit notes: if you're choosing between Zenphoto and Piwigo for a new install, I'd push you toward Piwigo unless you have a strong reason to prefer Zenphoto. Piwigo's development is more active, the plugin ecosystem is larger, and the mobile experience is better. Zenphoto's strengths are simplicity and a smaller surface area, which are real but specialised reasons.
If you have an existing Zenphoto site and you're moving hosts, we'll migrate it for free. The platform runs cleanly on PHP 8.3 with a current release. Daily backups capture both the database and the photo storage on disk. 7-day expert support is available if you hit anything during setup or migration.

Where ZenPhoto CMS Fits
Best for
Personal photo galleries, small photographers' online portfolios, family archives, and any case where the operator wants a self-hosted minimum-moving-parts gallery. Particularly suited to people who already understand FTP-style file organisation and don't want a SaaS platform between them and their photos. Honest fit for low-volume, low-collaboration use.
Watch for
Development cadence is slow; releases are infrequent. Plugin and theme ecosystem is small and ageing. No AI tagging, no native cloud storage, no native client-proofing for professional photographers. Mobile experience is functional but not best-in-class. For a new project, Piwigo is generally a better-supported choice. Zenphoto suits people who specifically want its lighter, simpler approach.

A ZenPhoto CMS case from our books
A retired wildlife photographer in the Scottish Borders moved his personal portfolio from a SaaS portfolio platform to Zenphoto in 2024. He'd been paying £18 a month for a portfolio service he barely used, just to publish a couple of new image sets a year. Total of around 1,200 photos across 24 albums spanning 30 years of his work.
We installed Zenphoto on a £5.99 shared plan, set up an FTP-based workflow he was comfortable with from his pre-SaaS days (drop new albums into a folder, let Zenphoto pick them up), enabled image sizing via ImageMagick, and applied a clean minimal theme he chose from the Zenphoto theme list. Initial setup took about three hours including support time.
Two years on, his hosting cost is £143.76 against the £432 he was paying the SaaS for the same period. He has full control of his images, no vendor risk, and the simpler UI suits him better than the SaaS\'s product-heavy approach. The photographer made a point of saying that "doing less" was what he wanted from the platform.
What we would tell anyone in the same spot: match the platform to the operator. Zenphoto suits people who like a smaller, simpler tool. Piwigo or SmugMug suits people who want more features.

What we look for in cms hosting
A content management system is a long-term tenant on your hosting, not a quick install. We tune for what CMSs actually do day to day: an opcache configured to survive plugin and theme upgrades, PHP memory at 256MB or higher because page builders chew through it, daily backups that include the uploads directory and not just the database, and free SSL enforced from day one. We also keep an honest opinion about which CMS suits which site and will tell you when something would run better elsewhere.

ZenPhoto CMS Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running ZenPhoto CMS on our hosting.
Maintained but slowly. Releases happen, mostly focused on PHP version compatibility and security fixes rather than new features. The maintainer team is small. If "actively developed" means weekly releases and a roadmap of new features, Zenphoto isn't that. If it means "still receives security updates and runs on current PHP", yes. For a low-stakes personal gallery, the slow cadence is fine; for a critical commercial site, look at Piwigo.
For most new photo CMS installs in 2026, Piwigo. Larger plugin ecosystem, more active development, better mobile experience. Choose Zenphoto specifically if you want a lighter, simpler platform with fewer moving parts and you don't need the features Piwigo offers beyond basic galleries. Both run fine on our shared hosting and both have one-click installers. Try them both with sample content if you're unsure.
Not directly for display. RAW files (CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG) are camera formats meant for editing, not for the web. The standard workflow is to export JPEG or WebP versions from your editor (Lightroom, Capture One, Darktable) and upload those. You can store the RAWs alongside the JPEGs on your server as a backup, but Zenphoto won't render them in the browser. The same is true of Piwigo and most self-hosted gallery platforms.
No, neither natively. Tagging is manual or based on EXIF metadata, and search is a basic text search across titles, descriptions, and tags. If AI tagging is essential to your workflow, look at SaaS platforms (Adobe Lightroom CC, Excire, or specialist services) or look into a custom integration on a different CMS. Zenphoto is deliberately a simpler tool than that.
Most SaaS platforms (Smugmug, 500px, Format, Squarespace) let you bulk-export your images plus metadata. From there, organise into folders matching your album structure and FTP them to your Zenphoto installation's albums directory. Zenphoto will pick them up and create the album records automatically on next admin login. Plan an evening for a portfolio of around 500 to 2,000 images. We'll help if you get stuck.
