What is Revive Adserver?
Revive Adserver is an open-source ad server, originally forked from OpenX in 2013 when OpenX moved its core product closed-source. It lets publishers run, deliver, track, and report on advertising campaigns from their own infrastructure rather than relying on a third-party network like Google Ad Manager.
The platform supports banner ads, HTML5 creatives, video ads, third-party tag forwarding, geo-targeting, day-parting, frequency capping, conversion tracking, and detailed reporting. It can serve ads to any site that can include an ad tag, regardless of the platform that site is built on. Many publishers use it specifically because it keeps user data on their own servers rather than handing it to an ad network.
Revive runs on PHP and MySQL, including PHP 8.3 in recent releases. It needs a database for impressions/clicks/conversions, and the busier the network, the heavier the database write load. For low-to-medium traffic publisher networks (under 5 million impressions a month) a 365i shared plan is sufficient. Higher volume installs are better suited to a cloud server.
365i’s editorial review of Revive Adserver
Revive Adserver is one of those applications where the use case has narrowed but the people who still use it really need it. In 2026, most publishers default to Google Ad Manager because it's free, integrates with AdSense, and has the demand pipeline. The publishers who deliberately self-host on Revive are doing it for one of three reasons: data sovereignty, direct sales relationships, or networks that fall outside Google's policy boundaries.
I've hosted Revive for clients across all three buckets. A trade publication that sells ads directly to industry partners and wants the campaign data on their own server. A regional media group running campaigns for local advertisers where the ad spend per slot doesn't justify Google's friction. A specialist site that handles content Google's auction won't bid on, so they sell direct and serve direct.
"Revive isn't trying to compete with Google Ad Manager on auction depth or programmatic demand. It competes on ownership. If your business model is direct sales to advertisers and you want the relationship and the data on your own infrastructure, Revive does that, and it's been doing it for over a decade."
Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting
From a hosting perspective the thing to know is that Revive is database-heavy. Every impression and every click writes to the database, and at scale that adds up. A small site doing 50,000 monthly impressions barely registers. A regional publisher doing 4 million monthly impressions across 30 sites starts to matter. We've had clients on shared at the lower end and clients on cloud servers at the higher end.
The maintenance cron is important. Revive needs the maintenance script to run regularly (every 5 to 15 minutes depending on volume) to update statistics, prune old data, and rotate frequency caps. If you don't run the cron, the admin reporting drifts and database tables get bloated. We set this up at install time on shared plans, and on cloud servers you'd typically have it on a system cron rather than a web-triggered one.
One-click install, PHP 8.5, MySQL 8, free SSL, daily backups, and we'll help you with the cron. From £5.99 a month on shared, or £9.99 a month on a cloud server if you outgrow shared. Free migration if you're moving from another host, including the database.

Where Revive Adserver Fits
Best for
Publishers selling ads directly to advertisers, networks that need full control over user data, trade and specialist publications running brand campaigns, and operators who want detailed reporting without paying SaaS ad-server fees. Particularly suited to publishers who already have established advertiser relationships and don't need a programmatic auction layer.
Watch for
No native programmatic demand pipeline; you bring your own advertisers. Database write load grows with impression volume; tune indexes early. The admin UI looks dated next to modern SaaS ad servers. HTML5 creative support exists but doesn't match Google's tooling. Cookie-consent and GDPR compliance are your responsibility, not built in. Reporting is solid but old-fashioned.

A Revive Adserver case from our books
A specialist trade publication in the food and drink sector moved their ad serving from a SaaS provider to Revive in 2024 because the SaaS subscription had jumped to £180 a month and they were only using a fraction of the features. They run direct campaigns for around 35 advertisers across three sites, totalling roughly 1.8 million monthly impressions.
We migrated them onto a £9.99 cloud server (the database write load was sustained enough that I wanted them on dedicated resources rather than shared), set up the maintenance cron, configured database indexes for the impression and click tables based on their query patterns, and migrated their historical reporting data from the SaaS export. Initial setup took about half a day.
In the year since, the platform has handled their volume without issue. They've added five new advertisers and a fourth site, total impressions are now around 2.4 million a month, and the database is sitting at about 4.2 GB. Their hosting cost is £119.88 a year against the £2,160 a year they were paying for SaaS, so the calculator on this one is straightforward.
What we would tell anyone in the same spot: get the cron right at install, plan database indexes before traffic ramps, and don't be tempted by shared hosting if you're above a million monthly impressions.
Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.
What we look for in marketing software hosting
Marketing automation and newsletter software is mostly about email infrastructure rather than PHP performance. We help configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC at the DNS layer during setup, advise on warming up a sending domain rather than blasting from cold, and tune cron to handle send queues without timing out. For teams sending tens of thousands of emails a day, we strongly recommend an external transactional provider like Mailgun, SendGrid, or Brevo rather than relying on shared SMTP.

Revive Adserver Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running Revive Adserver on our hosting.
Not natively, but it can serve third-party ad tags. So if you wanted to use Revive for direct-sold inventory and fall back to AdSense for unsold inventory, you can paste the AdSense tag as the default creative on a zone. Many publishers run a hybrid setup like this. Revive handles the direct relationships, and AdSense fills the gaps. Setup takes about an hour with one of our support engineers if you want help.
Yes. The cron updates aggregated statistics, rotates frequency caps, and cleans up old data. If it doesn't run, your reporting will drift, your frequency caps will malfunction, and the database tables for impressions/clicks will bloat. We set up the cron during installation. On shared it runs every 15 minutes, on cloud servers we usually move it to a system cron at 5-minute intervals for higher-volume sites.
Yes, including VAST tags, VPAID where supported by the player, and HTML5 video creatives. Video ad serving is more bandwidth-intensive than display, so factor that into your hosting plan. A regional publisher running 200,000 monthly video pre-rolls will see noticeably more bandwidth than the same volume of banner impressions, and that's worth considering if you're close to your shared plan's bandwidth allocation.
No, GDPR consent management is your responsibility. Revive will set tracking cookies for impression and click measurement, so you need a consent management platform (CMP) that gates ad serving until consent is given. We can recommend free CMP options or paid ones depending on your volume. If you're a UK or EU publisher, this is non-negotiable in 2026.
Revive is forked from OpenX, so migrating from a recent OpenX install is mostly database-level and we can do it cleanly. Migrating from other platforms (DFP, AdButler, AdRotate) usually means exporting campaign and zone data via the source platform's API, transforming the data, and importing into Revive. We've done all of these. Plan a day for the data side, plus tag changes on your sites.
