What is a .theatre domain?
The .theatre domain uses the British spelling, which gives it a natural home with UK venues, drama schools, and theatre companies. West End producers, regional repertory theatres, and amateur dramatic societies all benefit from a domain that announces their art form in the address. It's also picked up by drama tutors and youth theatre groups building their online presence.
Who should register .theatre?

Why a .theatre domain costs more than most websites
Only one extension on our entire price list costs more than this one. A .theatre runs to more than forty times a .co.uk every year, which for an amateur dramatic society is the kind of figure that has to be voted on, and for a small venue is a lighting hire. That number is the first fact anyone should be given about this extension, and it is usually the last thing a registrar mentions.
The British spelling is the real draw. XYZ.COM LLC took .theatre into the root zone in August 2015, with CentralNic providing the technical operation from London, and it sits opposite a separate .theater run by a different registry for American usage. UK venues, drama schools and companies get the spelling they actually use, which is not nothing when your audience would notice the other one.
There are no eligibility rules. No Arts Council relationship, no company registration, no venue. Anybody can buy any available name, which also means the extension proves nothing about the organisation behind it.
Is .theatre the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.theatre works well if
- You are a producing house or a venue where the address appears on posters, tickets and programmes, and the spelling matters to your audience.
- The name only works with the word theatre in it, and every reasonable .co.uk version has gone or needs hyphens.
- The annual cost is a rounding error against your marketing budget, and you would rather own the obvious address than argue about it later.
Look elsewhere if
- You are an amateur society or youth group. The annual fee is real money out of subs, and a .org.uk does the same job for a fraction of it.
- Your audience is local and finds you by searching the town. A generic extension gives Google no geographic signal at all.
- You want both spellings covered. The American .theater is a separate registry, so this does not protect you from the variant at all.
For an am-dram society or a youth theatre, a .org.uk says the same thing for a tiny fraction of the annual cost. See .org.uk pricing.
.theatre vs .org.uk: which should you register?
For a UK theatre organisation this is the comparison that actually decides the budget. A .org.uk costs a fraction as much every year, tells Google the site is British, moves between registrars almost instantly because .uk transfers are an IPS tag change, and carries a not-for-profit tone that suits a society, a trust or a youth group. It also does not require anyone to spell an eight-letter word after the dot.
The .theatre buys one thing: the word itself, in the right spelling, in the address. That is worth paying for when the address is printed on thousands of tickets and posters a year and the organisation has the budget to keep it renewed indefinitely. It is very hard to justify when the same money would cover the rights for a production.
.theatre domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .theatre domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyThe registry sets the wholesale price and has always positioned this one at the top of the market. Nothing about the domain is different technically: it resolves the same way as a .co.uk, supports the same records and the same DNSSEC. What you are buying is a scarce, exact word in the spelling British audiences use. Because it renews annually, price it over the life of the organisation rather than the first year, and check whether the money would do more as marketing.
They are two separate extensions run by two different registries, with the British and American spellings respectively. Registering one gives you no claim on the other, and no redirect between them exists, so an audience that spells it the other way lands nowhere. For a UK venue that is usually irrelevant, since your audience uses the British spelling. If you tour internationally or sell to American audiences, it is one more reason to keep a conventional address as the one you actually publish.
A .org.uk, comfortably, and it suits the organisation better. It costs a small fraction of the annual figure on this page, signals not-for-profit, gives Google a UK geographic signal that helps people searching for a society in your town, and comes with Nominet privacy for UK individual registrants at no extra cost. Put the society name in front of it, use the word theatre in the page titles and headings where it does real search work, and spend the difference on the programme.
