The longer answer

Does a .graphics domain help you rank? No

The most common reason people buy a keyword extension is a belief that the keyword helps them rank. It does not, and Google has said so directly since 2015. Worth clearing up first on a .graphics domain, because graphics is exactly the sort of word a designer hopes is doing double duty in the address bar and on the results page.

What the extension does do is describe you to a human reading a search result, a business card or an email signature, and that is not nothing. Somebody scanning ten results sees the word before they read the page title. Treat it as a design decision, which it is, rather than a search tactic, which it is not.

The word itself is the second thing to weigh. In the trade, graphics has drifted. Studios call themselves brand, design or creative far more often than graphic these days, and outside the trade the word points at graphics cards and rendering as readily as at print and identity work. Neither is fatal. Both mean the extension describes a slightly older version of the profession than the one you probably sell.

Against that, it is among the cheaper extensions in this category, it is one of the 2013 originals, and Binky Moon has run it steadily since. Registration is open, with no portfolio, no qualification and no membership required of anybody. One upside of a word that has drifted is availability: plenty of studio names are still sitting unregistered here that went on .com fifteen years ago.

The honest answer

Is .graphics the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.graphics works well if

  • You do print, identity and layout work, and want the address to say so before anybody clicks it.
  • You run a sign shop, a print bureau or a repro house, where graphics is still the word customers use.
  • Your studio name is a common word and the .com went to an unrelated business in another country.
  • You want a keyword extension without the annual premium most of this category carries.

Look elsewhere if

  • You sell brand strategy rather than artwork. The word undersells you, and .design or .studio fit the pitch better.
  • You expect the keyword to help you rank. It will not, on Google's own published position.
  • Your clients are non-technical and will read graphics as video hardware or graphics cards.

Positioning as a brand or design studio rather than a production house? A .design says that more accurately, at a higher annual price. See .design pricing.

Head to head

.graphics vs .design: which should you register?

Same buyers, different halves of the job. .graphics points at the output: artwork, print, layout, the thing that gets made. .design points at the process: strategy, identity, the thing that gets charged for by the day.

.design costs close to twice as much every year and carries more weight with clients buying consultancy. .graphics is cheaper, more literal, and reads better for a production business than for a studio pitching brand work.

If you do both, buy the one that matches the work you want more of.

.graphics domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .graphics domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

No. Google published its position in 2015 and has not moved from it: keyword extensions are treated like any other generic extension, and the keyword gives no advantage or disadvantage in search. What does move rankings is the content on the page, the links pointing at it and the technical health of the site. Choose the extension for how it reads to people, and do the search work elsewhere.

It depends which end of the work you sell. .graphics reads as production: artwork, print, layout, finished files. .design reads as thinking: identity, strategy, the part clients pay a day rate for. .design costs close to twice as much annually, which is worth it if it matches your pitch and wasted if your clients are print buyers.

Yes. There is no qualification, no portfolio review and no trade body membership. Binky Moon operates it under Identity Digital, whose acceptable use policy is the only real limit: the registry can suspend, cancel or transfer a name used for phishing, malware, spam or trademark infringement, or where the registration details are not kept accurate and up to date.

Some will, especially outside the design trade. The word covers print and identity work in one context and GPUs, rendering and game engines in another, and the reader brings their own assumption. A studio name in front of the dot usually settles it. If your clients are technical buyers, test the full address on two or three of them before you order it.
