What is a .pink domain?

The .pink domain appeals to brands that embrace the colour as part of their identity. Beauty brands, breast cancer charities, children's party planners, and businesses with a feminine or playful aesthetic all find .pink a natural match. It's also used by brands where pink is simply part of the name or logo, giving them a domain that reinforces their visual identity.

The charity association a .pink domain carries

Pink is not a neutral colour online, and that is the thing to weigh before anything else. Decades of breast cancer fundraising have attached the colour to a cause in most people's minds, which cuts two ways. If you are running a fundraiser, a charity campaign or an awareness event, the extension does real work in a single word. If you are a commercial brand with no connection to any of that, an address ending in .pink can read as borrowing a cause you have nothing to do with, and that is a harder problem to fix than an unfamiliar ending.

Afilias took the extension into the root zone in December 2013, one of the earliest of the new generic endings to reach the root, and the delegation record now names Identity Digital Limited. There are no eligibility rules, no charity registration test and no sector restriction: anybody can buy any available name.

Which leaves the usual practical points. The short, obvious words in front of the dot are on the premium list, so check the exact name before you fall in love with the idea.

The honest answer

Is .pink the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.pink works well if

  • You are running an awareness campaign or a fundraising event where the colour is the shorthand your audience already recognises.
  • The brand name ends in the word Pink, so moving it behind the dot gives you a shorter address that reads as one phrase.
  • You own a beauty or lifestyle brand built visually around the colour and want the matching address held rather than left available to someone else.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your business has no link to the causes people associate with the colour. Borrowed goodwill is noticed, and it is difficult to explain away.
  • You sell business to business. A colour ending on a quotation invites a question about whether you are the right supplier, however unfair that is.
  • The name that makes the idea work is a premium registration, which changes the cost from a small annual line to a decision in its own right.

If the colour is decoration rather than the name, the .co.uk is the better main address and costs less than half. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.pink vs .co.uk: which should you register?

For a UK organisation these are not rivals so much as different jobs. The .co.uk is the address that goes on the letterhead: cheaper, familiar, read by Google as British, and near-instant to move between registrars because a .uk transfer is an IPS tag change rather than a full transfer.

The .pink is the address you print on a poster for one campaign, or hold defensively because your brand name ends in the colour. Where charities in particular get this wrong is putting the campaign address on donation material as the only route in, then discovering the following year that the campaign has moved on and the address has not. Run the campaign name in front of a permanent .co.uk or .org.uk and you keep both.

FAQ

.pink domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .pink domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

Yes, and it is one of the clearest uses for the extension, because the association does the explaining for you on a poster or a wristband. Two cautions. Check that the campaign name you want is not a registered charity's trademark, since fundraising names are protected like any other, and be clear on the page about which registered charity receives the money and under what number. The address helps people remember the campaign; it does nothing to reassure them the donation arrives.

In most business-to-business settings it will cost you a little credibility, and the sector matters far more than the colour does. Buyers in procurement roles see an unfamiliar ending and check whether the company is what it claims, which is friction you did not need. Where the brand is consumer-facing, visual and already built around the colour, none of that applies. Use it as a second address in front of a conventional one if there is any doubt.

You have hit a premium name. Identity Digital reserves the right to hold names back from standard registration, including premium names it prices separately and names reserved to meet ICANN requirements, and short common words in front of a colour are exactly the sort of thing that list contains. Premium names on many extensions also renew at the premium rate every year, not just in year one, so ask us for the registration and the renewal figure together before deciding.
