How .monster went from brand extension to public
This one has a history most extensions do not. It was applied for by Monster Worldwide, the company behind the monster.com job board, and delegated to them as a brand extension: a namespace one company owned and nobody else could buy into. That plan was abandoned. XYZ.COM LLC took over the delegation in February 2019 and opened it up, which is why an extension that started life as recruitment infrastructure is now sold to anyone with a card.
The pricing reflects that reset. On our list it is the cheapest extension in this group and the only one that undercuts a .com, which makes it unusually easy to justify for a side project or a second address.
One detail worth knowing before you search: XYZ publishes its .monster premium list openly as a downloadable file, and the note at the top of that file says each premium tier applies only to the registration fee, with standard fees applying to renewal and transfer. That is a better deal than the usual arrangement, where a premium name carries a premium renewal for as long as you hold it.

Since then it has been an ordinary open extension sold through registrars to anyone, with no connection to recruitment. The association still lives in some people's heads though, so if you are naming a recruitment or careers product, expect to be asked whether you are affiliated, and expect a trademark question if your name leans that way.
It can be, and the word is friendlier in children's publishing than it sounds in the abstract. The practical checks are the ones any parent-facing brand needs: does the name read as playful rather than frightening on its own, will filtering software in schools take a view on it, and can a parent type it correctly having heard it once. Eight letters after the dot is a lot to spell out at a school gate, so test the whole address out loud before you build the brand around it.
