What is a .moda domain?
"Moda" means "fashion" in Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, giving this domain a built-in audience across Southern Europe and Latin America. Fashion brands, boutiques, and style bloggers targeting these markets get a domain that feels native rather than imported. For UK fashion businesses looking to expand into European markets, .moda carries instant credibility.

Who actually reads .moda as the word for fashion
Moda means fashion in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, and something close to it in Polish, Romanian and Turkish. That is a large number of readers, and it is the reason the extension exists. What it is not is a large number of British readers. To most people in Kettering or Kirkcaldy, moda is not a word. It is either meaningless or a near miss for modal, and an address nobody can parse is an address they mistype.
So the question is not whether you sell clothes. It is which language your customers think in. A boutique in Milan, a label selling into Spain, a Portuguese-language style publication: for those the extension does exactly what a good one should, saying what the site is in the reader's own language. A Midlands womenswear brand shipping to UK postcodes gets none of that benefit and pays close to four times a .co.uk for the privilege.
The extension is open, with no trade body, sector or country test. United TLD Holdco took it into the root zone in January 2014 and Dog Beach, LLC has held it since June 2021.
Is .moda the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.moda works well if
- Your customers read Italian, Spanish or Portuguese, and the address should say what the site is without translation.
- You are launching a label into Southern European or Latin American markets and want a name that does not read as an English import.
- The brand name is short and the word fashion is the natural second half, so moving it behind the dot gives you one clean phrase.
Look elsewhere if
- You sell mainly to UK shoppers. They will not read moda as fashion, and a .co.uk carries a geographic signal in Google that this cannot.
- You take orders over the phone. Spelling out a four-letter word most callers do not recognise is a small friction repeated for ever.
- You are treating the extension as a route into European search results. It does not target a country, and real international ranking comes from hreflang, local content and links.
Selling to UK customers first and Europe later? Start with the .co.uk and add this when the European site is real. See .co.uk pricing.
.moda vs .shop: which should you register?
Both put a word after the dot that describes the business, but they describe different things. A .shop says you sell, in a word almost every reader of English recognises instantly, and it works for any product category. A .moda says fashion specifically, to a reader who speaks a Romance language, and says very little to anyone else.
For a UK fashion retailer selling internationally, .shop is the safer of the two and usually the cheaper. The case for .moda is narrower and stronger where it applies: you are addressing a specific language market, and you want the address to sound native there rather than translated. If that is the actual plan, buy it. If it is aspiration rather than plan, buy the .shop and revisit later.
.moda domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .moda domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNo. The extension has no eligibility rules: no trade body membership, no VAT registration, no proof you sell clothing. It is first come, first served like most open generic extensions. That does mean the address is a description you have chosen rather than a claim anyone has checked, so it will not lend credibility on its own. Buyers judge a fashion site on the photography, the returns policy and the payment options, and none of that is helped or hindered by the extension.
Not by itself. Google treats generic extensions as having no geographic target, so a .moda gives search engines no signal that your site is for Italian or Spanish readers. What does work is the ordinary international setup: content in the right language, hreflang annotations, a country target set where appropriate, and links from sites in that market. The extension can still help a human reader recognise what the site is at a glance, and that is a reasonable reason to want one.
Most will not recognise the word, which is the honest answer and the main thing to weigh. In practice that shows up as people typing .com by mistake, asking you to spell it on the phone, and hesitating slightly before clicking an unfamiliar ending in an email. None of those are fatal, and a strong brand overcomes all of them, but they are real costs that a .co.uk simply does not have. If the UK is your main market, this is the wrong extension to lead with.
