What is BuddyPress?
BuddyPress is a free, open-source WordPress plugin that adds social networking features to a standard WordPress site. It has been in active development since 2008, originally created by Andy Peatling and now maintained by a volunteer team under the WordPress.org project umbrella. It is licensed under the GPL.
The plugin adds member profiles, activity streams, user groups, private messaging, friend connections, and an extended sign-up flow. Each feature is a component that can be turned on or off independently, so a site can run lightweight (just profiles and groups) or as a fuller social network with messaging and notifications.
BuddyPress runs on whatever stack hosts your WordPress site, with no additional server requirements. It pairs naturally with bbPress for forums and integrates with most well-written WordPress plugins, although membership and learning management plugins require care during selection.
365i’s editorial review of BuddyPress
BuddyPress had a quiet few years where I would not have recommended it to anyone. The development pace had slowed, big names in the WordPress community had moved on, and I worried it was drifting. That changed when the project was formally taken back under WordPress.org stewardship and active development resumed. As of today, BuddyPress is back, and for the right project it is genuinely the best way to build a community on WordPress without paying a SaaS subscription per active member.
I see it chosen for membership organisations, alumni networks, course communities running alongside an LMS, and the occasional internal staff network for organisations who do not want their team chatter on a public platform. The pattern is consistent: people who already use WordPress, already know how WordPress hosting works, and want a community layer that feels native rather than a bolted-on iframe.
"BuddyPress is the right call when your community already lives in WordPress. It is the wrong call if you have never used WordPress before, because then you are picking up two new tools at once."
Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting
What works well: the modular architecture means you can run BuddyPress as a lightweight profile-and-groups layer or as a full social network with activity streams, messaging, and friend connections. The integration with bbPress for forums is genuinely smooth. Theming is straightforward if your active WordPress theme is BuddyPress-ready (most modern ones either are or take half a day's templating to make so). Permissions and privacy controls are sane out of the box.
What's annoying: the plugin marketplace around BuddyPress is patchy. Some of the third-party extensions you will find on a Google search are abandoned, sometimes with security implications, so vet anything you install. The mobile experience is web-only, which is fine for most use cases but a problem if you want a native app feel. Email notification volume can balloon quickly on a busy site, so configure digests early or your members will mute you.
Hosting-stack notes from running BuddyPress on our platform: it lives inside WordPress and inherits whatever you have set up there. PHP memory at 256 MB or higher is sensible, particularly if you also run an LMS like LearnDash. The activity stream creates a lot of database rows over time, so a reasonable MySQL configuration matters more than raw PHP horsepower. We recommend object caching (we offer Redis) for any BuddyPress site over a few hundred active members, and a sensible image optimisation policy because user-uploaded avatars and group images add up fast.
If your audience already lives in WordPress, you want a community feature without monthly per-member fees, and you have someone who can spend a day on theming and permissions, BuddyPress is back to being the right answer. If you have never run WordPress before and you are buying it specifically for the community feature, you are taking on two learning curves at once and a hosted SaaS community tool may serve you better.

Where BuddyPress Fits
Best for
Membership organisations, alumni networks, course communities running alongside an LMS such as LearnDash or LifterLMS, and internal staff networks for teams who already use WordPress. Particularly strong when paired with bbPress forums for discussion and a membership plugin like Paid Memberships Pro for tiered access. Runs comfortably on our standard WordPress hosting plan with PHP memory at 256 MB and Redis object caching for sites over a few hundred active members.
Watch for
The third-party plugin marketplace around BuddyPress is patchy, with some popular search results pointing to abandoned plugins, so vet before installing. Email notification volume can balloon on a busy site, so configure digests early or members will mute you. The mobile experience is web-only, which is fine for most cases but a poor fit if you want native iOS or Android apps. Avoid choosing it as your introduction to WordPress.

A BuddyPress case from our books
A west-midlands professional membership body with around 3,800 members came to us last year after their custom-built community portal had become impossible to maintain. The original developer had left, the codebase had drifted, and members were complaining the site felt slow and clunky. We rebuilt the community on WordPress with BuddyPress for profiles and groups, bbPress for chapter discussion forums, and Paid Memberships Pro for the tier logic. We hosted them on our standard WordPress plan, raised PHP memory to 384 MB, and turned on Redis object caching once active member count crossed roughly 500.
Within three months, daily logins were up around 38 percent on the old portal's average. The technical support burden on the membership team dropped from around fifteen tickets a week to under four. We told them the same thing we tell everyone in this position: pick the boring, well-understood stack rather than the bespoke one. WordPress plus BuddyPress is not exciting, but it will still be running in five years.
Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.
What we look for in social networking hosting
A self-hosted community is a high-touch hosting workload. The activity stream creates database rows continuously, notification emails generate cron-driven outbound traffic, and member-uploaded media accumulates fast. We size MySQL with enough InnoDB buffer pool to keep the activity index in RAM, recommend Redis object caching once active member count crosses a few hundred, and tune image optimisation so avatars and cover photos do not bloat the storage account in a year.

Beyond Social Networking, our one-click installer covers 79 open-source PHP applications across 27 categories. A small selection from across the catalogue:
BuddyPress Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running BuddyPress on our hosting.
BuddyPress is a WordPress plugin, so it inherits whatever your WordPress install needs. Practically that means PHP 8.1 or higher, MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.3 or higher, and the standard WordPress PHP extensions. We recommend PHP memory at 256 MB or higher, particularly if you pair BuddyPress with bbPress, an LMS, or a membership plugin. Our WordPress hosting plans ship with PHP 8.5 and the right extensions enabled, ready for BuddyPress out of the box.
Install WordPress as a one-click install through My365i if you are starting fresh, then install BuddyPress from inside WordPress through Plugins, Add New, search BuddyPress, install, and activate. The setup wizard walks you through choosing which components to enable: extended profiles, groups, activity, messages, friends, notifications, and the sign-up flow. You can change these later. Most installs are live and accepting community sign-ups within a working hour.
Yes, with the right hosting setup. Our standard WordPress hosting plan handles BuddyPress communities up to around 1,000 active members comfortably. For larger communities, we recommend Redis object caching, which we offer on every plan, and PHP memory at 384 MB or higher. Communities over roughly 5,000 active members benefit from a small managed cloud server because the activity stream and notification volume push the database harder than typical WordPress workloads.
Our support covers the hosting platform: PHP and MySQL tuning, SSL, backups, Redis object caching, and WordPress core issues. For BuddyPress configuration work (custom theming, complex permissions, integration with membership plugins, custom activity types) we will help where we can but we are not a BuddyPress agency. We are happy to recommend WordPress agencies we have worked with for application-level work.
Yes, free of charge on any of our WordPress hosting plans. We move the WordPress core, the BuddyPress plugin, all member profiles, groups, activity history, private messages, and uploaded media. Most migrations finish within a working day with no downtime. We run on a staging URL first so you can test member sign-up, group creation, and notifications before switching DNS, because community sites are unforgiving if anything breaks for active members.
Yes, and more so than it was a few years ago. The project went through a quiet patch but is now formally back under WordPress.org stewardship with regular releases and an active core team. We tracked the project carefully through that quiet patch and would not have hosted new BuddyPress sites if we did not believe in the future of the codebase. Today it is a safe long-term choice for a WordPress-based community.
SaaS platforms charge per active member, which scales painfully past a few hundred members. They offer slicker mobile apps and a faster initial setup. BuddyPress is free, runs on hosting you already pay for if you have WordPress, and gives you full data ownership, but expects more setup effort and offers no native mobile app out of the box. The honest summary: pick BuddyPress when you already use WordPress and member volume will hurt you on a SaaS plan. Pick a SaaS tool when polished mobile apps matter more than data ownership.
