About Drupal

What is Drupal?

Drupal is an open-source content management framework first released in 2001. It is licensed under the GPL and maintained by the Drupal Association along with a large global community. Drupal 10 and 11 are the current supported major versions; Drupal 7 reached end-of-life in 2025. Drupal is built on Symfony components, uses Twig for templating, and is deployed via Composer.

The platform is built around modular extension. Out of the box, Drupal provides flexible content types, a granular permission system, a deep taxonomy system, multi-language support, and a flexible Views module for content listings. The contributed module ecosystem on drupal.org covers thousands of additional features.

Drupal is the right choice for complex editorial sites, government and public-sector deployments, university and large institutional sites, and anywhere structured content modelling and granular access control are mission-critical. The platform is taken seriously by UK central government, the BBC, and many UK enterprise users. The 365i application catalogue includes Drupal with a managed cloud server tier as the recommended hosting profile from £9.99/mo upward.

Our take

365i’s editorial review of Drupal

Drupal is the platform you reach for when WordPress isn't enough and Craft CMS is too small. That's not damning either of those, it's just where Drupal lives. Multi-author editorial workflows with proper editorial states, content types with deeply nested fields, granular per-role permissions, multi-language sites where each language is a first-class citizen, and integrations with enterprise identity providers, that's all Drupal territory and it's territory Drupal has owned for over twenty years.

I've hosted Drupal sites for agencies and in-house teams since the Drupal 6 days. Drupal 7 was the last "small Drupal" major version, friendly enough to run on shared hosting, simple enough to extend without Symfony knowledge. Drupal 8 onwards became enterprise software, with Composer-based deployment, a Symfony-derived architecture, and a steeper learning curve. That move was the right call for the projects that need Drupal, but it priced out the small-site users who have largely moved to Backdrop or WordPress.

What works well in current Drupal: the editorial workflow tools (Workspaces, Content Moderation, scheduled publishing) are genuinely good. The Views module is still the gold standard for "build me a list of any combination of content with any sort of filtering or display." Multi-language is excellent. The taxonomy system is unmatched. Once you've built a Drupal site properly, the admin experience for editors is calm and powerful.

"Drupal is the right answer for complex editorial sites that need to still make sense in five years. The build cost is higher than WordPress, the hosting cost is higher than WordPress, and the result is a site that doesn't have to be rebuilt every two years to keep up with the latest plug-in churn. For the right project, that trade is obviously worth it."

Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting

What's annoying: the learning curve. Drupal has its own opinions about everything, and learning them takes months not weeks. Module compatibility between major versions still requires care. The hosting requirements are non-trivial: PHP 8.5, MySQL 8, OPcache, ideally Redis or Memcached, plenty of memory, and Composer-based deployment. None of that is exotic in 2026, but it does mean Drupal is not running on a £3/mo shared host and looking good.

Hosting profile: we run Drupal on our managed cloud servers from £9.99/mo upwards. PHP 8.5 with tuned OPcache, MySQL 8 with a reasonable buffer pool, Redis for cache backend and sessions, and Composer-based deployment from a Git repository. We back up code, database, and uploaded files separately so a content restore doesn't have to be a full system rollback. We've hosted Drupal sites doing 600,000 visits a month on a single mid-tier cloud server with the right caching layer.

For UK clients, the latency win of UK-based hosting on Drupal is significant because Drupal page renders, even with caching, are heavier than static-page CMSs. Every 50ms of round-trip time you save matters more on Drupal than on a flat WordPress site. We've moved a few Drupal sites from US-hosted "Drupal-friendly" platforms to our UK cloud servers and seen UK page-load times drop substantially.

If you're choosing Drupal, choose it because the project needs it: complex content modelling, multi-language, multi-author editorial workflow, enterprise identity integration, public-sector compliance requirements. If you're not sure whether you need Drupal, you probably don't and WordPress will do the job at half the cost. If you do need Drupal, we'll host it properly.

Where Drupal Fits

Best for

Complex editorial sites, public-sector and government departments, university and large institutional sites, multi-language publishers with strict editorial workflow needs, and enterprise sites with deep integration requirements (LDAP, SAML, custom identity providers). Anywhere granular permissions and structured content modelling are mission-critical, not nice-to-have.

Watch for

Steep learning curve. PHP 8.3+ and Composer-based deployment rule out budget shared hosting. Module compatibility between major versions still needs care during upgrades. Build cost is higher than WordPress, hosting cost is higher, and the project needs to genuinely justify Drupal's capabilities or you're overpaying for unused power.

A Drupal case from our books

A regional UK university joined us in 2024 with a Drupal 9 site for a research department, previously hosted on a shared university IT infrastructure that wasn\'t meeting their performance targets. The site held around 4,200 nodes (publications, researcher profiles, news, events), needed multi-language support (English plus Welsh), and ran around 78,000 visits a month. They needed a managed cloud server with proper backups, staging, and a deployment workflow.

We provisioned one of our managed cloud servers at £29.99/mo, set up PHP 8.5 with tuned OPcache, configured Redis for Drupal cache and sessions, set up Composer-based deployment from their Git repository with a staging-to-production pipeline, and configured CDN with pre-caching on the public front-end. We also upgraded the site from Drupal 9 to Drupal 10 as part of the move, since Drupal 9 was reaching end-of-life and they had no in-house plan to do the upgrade.

End-to-end migration plus the version upgrade took us around 22 working hours over three weeks, with staged testing of every contributed and custom module. UK page-load times improved by roughly 44% (the cache backend change accounted for a big chunk of that). Editorial-workflow page-render times improved noticeably for staff. The university extended the relationship to two more departmental sites the following quarter.

What we would tell anyone in the same spot: hosting Drupal properly is its own discipline. Get a host who actually understands Composer, Redis, and OPcache, not just \"runs PHP\".

Hosting CMS apps

What we look for in cms hosting

A content management system is a long-term tenant on your hosting, not a quick install. We tune for what CMSs actually do day to day: an opcache configured to survive plugin and theme upgrades, PHP memory at 256MB or higher because page builders chew through it, daily backups that include the uploads directory and not just the database, and free SSL enforced from day one. We also keep an honest opinion about which CMS suits which site and will tell you when something would run better elsewhere.

FAQ

Drupal Hosting FAQ

Common questions we hear from people running Drupal on our hosting.

Drupal 10 requires PHP 8.1+ (8.3 recommended), Drupal 11 requires PHP 8.3+. Both need either MySQL 8 / MariaDB 10.7+ or PostgreSQL 13+. OPcache, APCu, and Composer are essential. Recommended memory is 512MB+ for the PHP process. Our managed cloud servers from £9.99/mo include all of this properly tuned. We don't recommend Drupal on shared hosting, the application will run but it won't perform anywhere near its capacity.

Drupal is in our application installer with a Composer-aware install path. For production deployments on managed cloud servers, we typically set up a Composer-based Git workflow rather than using the one-click installer, because Drupal's production best practice is deployment from version control. The one-click is fine for evaluation and small showcase sites. Either way, the application installer creates the database and walks you through the initial setup wizard.

Drupal scales very well with the right caching architecture. On a properly tuned managed cloud server with OPcache, Redis cache backend, internal page cache configured aggressively, and CDN front-loading, we've hosted Drupal editorial sites doing 600,000+ monthly visits on a single mid-tier cloud server. For larger scale, Drupal supports horizontal scaling with shared session storage and a centralised database, which our higher-tier cloud plans accommodate.

Hosting-layer support 7 days a week. PHP, MySQL or PostgreSQL, Composer, Redis, OPcache, file permissions, SSL, email, DNS, backups, migrations, deployment workflows, CDN, and platform-level performance tuning. We don't build Drupal modules, write custom Twig templates, or perform major-version upgrades as part of standard hosting support, those are development tasks that we quote separately or refer to our sister site 365iwebdesign.co.uk. The Drupal community on drupal.org is excellent for application-specific questions. Datacentre infrastructure is monitored 24/7.

Yes. Drupal migrations are part of our managed cloud server onboarding. Send us your existing host's SSH access, Git repository, and database details. We'll provision a UK cloud server, set up Composer-based deployment, restore the database and uploaded files, configure caching, set up SSL and CDN, and test before DNS cutover. Drupal 7 to Drupal 10 migrations are full rebuilds and we quote those separately. Drupal 9 to 10, or Drupal 10 to 11, we typically include in the migration if you ask.

Drupal has the strongest security track record in the major CMS field. The Drupal Security Team publishes advisories on a clear schedule (Wednesdays, with Public Service Announcements ahead of high-severity releases) and the project takes responsible disclosure seriously. Our hosting adds free SSL, separated daily backups for code, database, and files, file permission hardening, OPcache, and platform-level WAF rules. For public-sector clients, we'd add two-factor authentication on admin, IP-restrict the admin URL, configure rate limiting on login, and set up audit logging via a contributed module.
