The .srl eligibility rule and how it is enforced
The registry states the rule in one line: only companies registered as an SRL qualify to hold a .srl name, and that registration has to have been granted by a governmental body or a body authorised by one to issue it. This is not a box you tick at checkout. It is a condition that runs for the life of the domain, and the registrant agreement obliges you to tell your registrar promptly if your circumstances change and you stop meeting it.
The form itself is widespread. InterNetX names Italy and Romania alongside Argentina, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, which is a reasonable slice of Latin America and southern Europe under one abbreviation.
Two details soften the restriction more than you would expect. There is no cap on how many .srl domains an eligible company may hold, and no requirement that a name match the company name, so a qualifying business can register product and campaign names freely. Non-ASCII characters are not supported, which rules out accented spellings of Italian and Romanian names.
Who is allowed to register .srl?

- Who qualifies
- Companies doing business as a Sociedad de Responsabilidad Limitada, a Societa a Responsabilita Limitata or a Societate cu Raspundere Limitata. The registration must have been granted by a governmental body, or by an organisation a government has authorised to issue it, so an informal trading style is not enough.
- It applies for the whole term
- Eligibility is not a one-off check at the point of sale. The registrant agreement requires you to warrant that you meet the policy at all times, and to notify your registrar promptly of any change in circumstances that means you no longer do.
- Names are not restricted
- Once a company qualifies, the naming is open. The registry places no limit on how many .srl domains an eligible company may register and no requirement that a name match the company name, so product and campaign names are allowed. Only ASCII letters, digits and hyphens are supported, so accented spellings are out.
- If you do not qualify
- The registry reserves the right to refuse or cancel a registration, renewal or transfer, or to place the name on registry lock or hold, where it reasonably believes after investigation that the registrant does not comply. It also runs a contact for governments and law enforcement to report non-compliance, and begins investigating within 24 hours of a report.

Is .srl the right choice for you?

- You trade in several SRL countries at once, so no single national ending covers the business and a neutral corporate one does.
- You want several addresses for products or campaigns, which the registry allows without requiring any of them to match your company name.
Look elsewhere if
- You are a UK limited company. You do not qualify, and a registration made anyway can be cancelled or locked once the registry investigates.
- Your customers are in one country. The national ccTLD carries a geographic signal in search that this does not, and usually costs less.
- Your brand name uses accented characters. The registry supports only plain ASCII, so the spelling you use everywhere else cannot be registered.

.srl vs .sarl: which should you register?
They look like a matched pair and they are not. Both name a limited liability company form, this one for Italy, Romania and much of Latin America and .sarl for the French-speaking world. The difference is enforcement. A .srl registrant has to be a company registered as an SRL by a governmental body, and the registry can cancel or lock the name if that turns out to be untrue. A .sarl registrant is not asked anything.
So if the ending is meant to say something true about your legal form, .srl actually says it, and that is unusual among new extensions. The price of the signal is the obligation behind it: keep the company in good standing, keep your registrar informed, and treat a change of structure as something that affects the domain. If you want the corporate-form look without any of that, .sarl is the open door, with the honesty that it is an open door to anyone.

A company incorporated at Companies House as a private limited company is a different legal form, however similar the idea. If you have an Italian, Romanian or Latin American subsidiary that does qualify, register in that entity's name rather than the UK parent's.
No, and this is the most flexible part of the policy. The registry states plainly that an eligible company may register as many .srl domains as it needs, with no requirement that they match the company name. Once you are through the eligibility gate, product names, campaign names and shorter variants are all fair game. The restriction is on who registers, not on what they register, which is the reverse of how several other restricted extensions work.
You are obliged to tell your registrar promptly, and the registry can then act on it. The registrant agreement requires you to warrant that you meet the eligibility policy at all times and to report any change of circumstances that means you no longer do.
