What a .sg registration asks of a UK business
Singapore gives its own extension away freely, with one condition that catches most British buyers out. SGNIC's Rules of Registration say that all persons may apply for a name directly under .sg, then add that a foreign applicant must appoint and duly authorise a local agent as its administrative contact. That means a person or a company in Singapore who will answer for the registration. It is not a box you can fill in with your own Kettering address.
The zone has been in the root since 1988 and SGNIC's rules read like a national registry rather than a shop. It can ask for proof of eligibility before a name is registered and ask again after the name is live, and clause 8.15 says that failing to supply those documents may result in the registration being revoked. Applications are handled first come, first served, and the registry states it is under no obligation to give a reason for refusing one.
Set against the paperwork, the case for .sg is simple. Singaporeans expect a local address from a local business, corporate and public sector buyers treat it as the norm, and nothing else competes inside that market. If you are selling into Singapore rather than from it, the question to settle first is whether you have a real presence there. With a branch, a partner or a distributor willing to act as your administrative contact, the extension is worth having, and we can host the site in our Singapore data centre so the pages load locally too. Without one, you are hunting for somebody to sign for a domain you have not needed yet.
Who is allowed to register .sg?
Anyone may register a name directly under .sg, but a foreign applicant must appoint and authorise a local agent in Singapore as the administrative contact.
- Who may apply
- SGNIC opens names directly under .sg to all persons. There is no citizenship test and no company registration test at this level, which is what separates .sg from .com.sg, where the applicant is expected to be registered with ACRA, Enterprise Singapore or a professional body in Singapore.
- The local agent rule
- A foreign applicant must appoint and duly authorise a local agent as its administrative contact. In practice that is a branch, a subsidiary, a law or accountancy firm, or a distributor who agrees to hold the role and stay reachable for as long as you hold the domain.
- Proof can be demanded twice
- SGNIC may require evidence of eligibility with the application, and may require it again after the name has been registered. An applicant still completing a registration with ACRA or another body has thirty days from the date of application to produce it.
- If you do not qualify
- An application short of the required evidence can be rejected, and clause 8.15 states that failing to supply supporting documents after registration may result in SGNIC revoking the domain. The registry also says it is not obliged to explain a refusal, so a rejected order comes back without a diagnosis.

Is .sg the right choice for you?

.sg works well if
- You have a branch, subsidiary or distributor in Singapore who can act as the administrative contact, so the local agent condition costs you nothing.
- You sell to Singaporean consumers, who read a .sg the way a British shopper reads a .co.uk: proof the business is actually here.
- You are bidding for work with Singaporean companies or public bodies, where a local address is the unremarkable default.
- You already run a Singapore section inside a .com and want a separate local address, served from our Singapore data centre rather than the UK.
Look elsewhere if
- You have nobody in Singapore. Without a local agent the registration cannot complete, and paying a firm to hold the role adds a yearly cost on top of the domain.
- You are still testing whether Singapore is worth entering. A section on your existing site answers that question for nothing and carries no obligations.
- You want your details kept out of public view for free. That applies only to .uk domains under Nominet rules; anywhere else privacy is a paid extra, where the registry permits one at all.

.sg vs .co.uk: which should you register?
These two do the same job in different countries, and a UK company trading in both usually ends up holding both. The difference to plan around is not the price, it is the paperwork. A .co.uk asks nothing of you beyond accurate contact details. A .sg will not complete until somebody in Singapore agrees to be named as your administrative contact.
Speed is the second difference. A .uk transfer is an IPS tag change and lands in minutes, ours being STACK. A .sg moves on the registry's timetable and is measured in hours or days, so leave room in any migration plan rather than scheduling the cutover for the same afternoon.
Where both are affordable, run the .co.uk as the address on your invoices and the .sg as the Singapore facing site, hosted in Singapore rather than the UK. One business, two audiences, each getting the address it expects.

A .com carries no country signal at all, in any direction. The trade is that a .sg does nothing for you anywhere else, so it works as a second address beside your main one rather than as a replacement for it.
The domain can be taken away. SGNIC may require proof of eligibility after a name is registered, and clause 8.15 of its Rules of Registration says failure to provide those documents may result in the registration being revoked.
