Registering .navy without any naval connection
No navy is involved in .navy. Dog Beach, LLC operates it under a plain ICANN base agreement signed on 6 March 2014, with no service records to produce, no veteran status to prove and no endorsement from any armed force in any country. It sits alongside .army and .airforce, which came out of the same portfolio and work the same way.
There is one line you cannot cross. The Identity Digital acceptable use policy, which governs the Dog Beach extensions, lists "holding oneself out as having a status, credential, or authorization associated with a TLD when such status, credential, or authorization doesn't exist" as abusive use. Register a name for a ship association or a reunion group and nobody minds. Build something presenting itself as an official naval body and the registry has grounds to suspend it.
The other reading of the word is the colour. Navy is a shade before it is a service, so a menswear label, a paint range or an interiors brand can use it without any of the above coming into play. That is a smaller market than the veteran one, and the names in it are wide open.
Is .navy the right choice for you?
