When .management works for property and facilities firms

Management is a function rather than an industry, and that is what makes this extension useful in some hands and empty in others. The firms it fits are the ones where the noun is the whole service: block and estate management, facilities management, fund management, artist management. In every one of those the client is paying somebody to run a thing they own, and the address says it before the page has loaded.

Where it tends to misfire is management consultancy. A consultancy sells judgement and a point of view, so an address that reads as a category rather than as a name works against the thing being sold. That is the opposite problem from the property manager, who benefits from being read as a category.

The extension has been in the root zone since December 2013, delegated in the opening months of ICANN's new generic programme, first to John Goodbye LLC and now to Binky Moon within Identity Digital. Its registry agreement carries a public interest commitment that second level registrations will be open and available to lawful registrants, so nothing about the word implies a qualification, an accreditation or a professional body standing behind the site.

Ten characters is the practical cost. northgate.management is twenty characters and works. northgatepropertyservices.management is thirty-six and does not. The shorter the name in front of the dot, the better this extension performs, which is the reverse of how most people shop for a domain.

The honest answer

Is .management the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.management works well if

  • Managing something on a client's behalf is the service itself, so the extension describes the work rather than decorating it.
  • Your brand name is one short word, which keeps the full address inside a length people can read off a sign and retype correctly.
  • You run separate arms of a group and want each one to read clearly, so the property arm can sit on this while the rest stay elsewhere.
  • You want a portal address for leaseholders or tenants that is obviously not the marketing site.

Look elsewhere if

  • You sell advice rather than administration. An address that reads as a category undercuts a consultancy trying to look distinctive.
  • Your trading name is long. Ten characters after the dot pushes an already wordy address past what anybody will type from memory.
  • Your enquiries come from local search. A .co.uk carries a UK signal that this extension does not, and it costs less every year.

Winning work through local search? A .co.uk is cheaper and gives Google a clear signal that you serve Britain. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.management vs .partners: which should you register?

Both of these describe a professional practice, and they describe different things. .management says you run something on a client's behalf. .partners says who owns the firm doing it, or that partnering is the commercial model.

A block management company looking after forty buildings is .management. A four-partner accountancy practice is .partners. A software vendor running a reseller channel is also .partners, for a completely different reason. The common mistake is to pick whichever sounds more senior, and they are not rungs on a ladder.

Price separates them as well. .partners is one of the dearer business extensions we sell and .management one of the cheaper, so where the meaning is a coin toss, the renewal figure will decide it for you.

.management domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .management domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

No. There is no qualification, no accreditation and no professional body involved, and the registry agreement commits the operator to keeping registrations open to any lawful registrant. That is worth stating on your own site rather than hoping the extension implies something it does not. If you hold an ARMA, RICS or IWFM membership, the badge on the page is what a client will actually check.

Usually not, and this is the one case where the obvious fit is the wrong one. A consultancy is selling a distinct point of view, and an address that reads as a generic category works against that. The extension suits firms that administer something concrete for a client, where being read as a category is helpful. For a consultancy, a short .co.uk or .com behind a distinctive name does more.

A .co.uk is the stronger main address for a UK block or estate manager. Google reads it as a British site, which counts on searches such as "block management Northampton", and it costs less. Where .management earns its place is as a second, memorable address to print on leaseholder correspondence and redirect to the main site, or as a separate portal for residents.

The renewal figure is shown on this page and it sits at the cheaper end of the business extensions we sell, though still above a .co.uk. Renewal is annual and continues for as long as you hold the name, so compare it over ten years rather than one. Every registration includes free DNS management, email forwarding and one free 10GB mailbox at no extra cost.
