How EETT sets the rules for .gr domains
Greek domain policy is written by a regulator. EETT, the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission, publishes the Regulation on Management and Assignment of .gr and .ελ Domain Names and amends it by formal decision, the codified text dating from April 2024 and the most recent amendment from December 2025. That matters more than it sounds: the terms attached to a .gr domain are a matter of Greek regulatory decision, not a registry's commercial terms of service, so they can move without a registrar being consulted.
Eligibility is not the obstacle. The regulation allows a domain name to be assigned to a natural or legal person, whether established in Greece or not, and each name goes to one holder with no shared assignment. A UK company can hold a .gr without a Greek office, a Greek company or a local contact.
Two details are worth knowing before you order. The registration declaration is accompanied by a solemn statement that the details given are true and accurate, so this is not a form to fill in casually. And where the holder's residence or registered office is abroad, EETT sends documents to the email address in the registry and nowhere else, including a summons to a hearing when a third party applies to have the domain deleted. An abandoned mailbox on the registration is how a UK holder finds out about a deletion case after it has been decided.
Greek buyers know .gr and expect it. There is also .ελ in Greek script, and the optional second levels com.gr, edu.gr, net.gr and org.gr, with gov.gr reserved for government bodies.
Is .gr the right choice for you?

.gr vs .com: which should you register?
In Greece these two do different jobs. A .com is understood everywhere and says nothing about where you are; a .gr says you are trading in Greece, which is exactly what a Greek buyer is looking for and exactly what a British one is not.
Pick .gr when the audience is Greek, the site is in Greek, and you want the search engine and the visitor to reach the same conclusion about who you serve. Pick .com when you sell across borders, when the brand travels, or when you would rather not have your primary address governed by a national regulator's decisions.
If Greece is one market among several, keep the .com as the permanent home and run the .gr as a Greek-language site rather than a redirect. A redirect gives Google nothing to index locally, which wastes most of what you paid for.

Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNo. EETT's regulation allows a .gr name to be assigned to a natural or legal person whether established in Greece or not, so a UK business can hold one directly. There is no local presence test, no Greek administrative contact requirement and no document to supply at the point of order. The declaration you sign does have to be true, which is a different kind of condition.
Take the .gr if it is free. The second levels com.gr, edu.gr, net.gr and org.gr exist and are optional rather than mandatory, so most Greek businesses now sit directly under .gr and that is what people type. A com.gr is a reasonable fallback when the direct name has gone, but it is longer, harder to say aloud and slightly harder to explain. gov.gr is reserved for government bodies and is not open to you.
EETT handles it, and it will contact you by email. Under the regulation a domain can be deactivated or deleted following a complaint from a third party with a legal interest, a court decision, or an enforceable decision of a competent authority. Where the holder is based outside Greece, EETT sends documents such as a summons to a hearing to the email address declared in the registry. Keep that address monitored and current, because there is no second channel.
Probably not. A country extension earns its annual fee when there is a country-specific site behind it, in the local language, that you intend to keep. Occasional orders from Greece will keep arriving through your existing address, and a redirected .gr adds nothing to your visibility in Greek search results. Treat it as a defensive registration in that case, and price it as a cost you will pay every year indefinitely.
