What moving to the .org registry changed for .gives
The .gives domain has had three owners in a decade, and the last change is the one that matters. It was delegated to United TLD Holdco in June 2014, passed to Dog Beach, LLC in June 2021, and moved to Public Interest Registry on 25 August 2022. PIR is the not-for-profit that has run .org since 1985, so a .gives now sits in the same registry family as .org, .ngo, .ong, .charity and .foundation.
What it did not inherit is the eligibility rules some of those neighbours carry. .ngo and .ong are Community extensions under ICANN Specification 12, with a seven-point test and an audit process behind them. .gives runs under a plain base agreement, so anybody can register one, charity or not, with nothing to prove.
Read that as a warning as much as a convenience. The word promises generosity and nothing in the registration process backs the promise up, so a donor who checks will find no more assurance in a .gives than in any other extension. For a UK charity, the assurance a donor actually looks for is a registered charity number on the page and an address they already recognise in the bar.
Is .gives the right choice for you?
