What is a .firm.in domain?
The .firm.in extension sits within India's .in namespace, managed by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI). It's designed for firms, partnerships, and business entities operating in the Indian market. With over 900 million internet users and a rapidly growing digital economy, India is a market that rewards early investment. A .firm.in domain marks your business clearly within the Indian commercial space.

Where firm.in sits in India's .in namespace
India's registry, NIXI, publishes two lists. The long one is the zones anyone may register in, and firm.in is on it, alongside .in itself, co.in, net.in, org.in, gen.in, ind.in and around thirty others including bank.in, school.in and io.in. The registry's own wording is that registration is available freely to all parties worldwide, and there are no nexus or other qualifications.
The short list is the reserved one: ac.in for academic institutions, res.in for Indian research institutes, edu.in for Indian colleges and universities, gov.in for government and mil.in for the military. Nothing sits between the two. firm.in is not a lightly checked professional zone; it is an open zone with a suggestive label.
What that label buys you is availability. Where a two word .in or .co.in went years ago, the same words are often still free under firm.in, and it reads sensibly on a partnership, a practice or a consultancy. What it costs you is recognition. Indian visitors know .in and co.in on sight, and a good many have never seen firm.in at all.
Who is allowed to register .firm.in?
No eligibility rules apply, but NIXI enforces naming rules that rule out short names and anything written in a non-Latin script.
- Three characters minimum
- NIXI states that .IN names may be between 3 and 63 characters. One and two character names are not available to the public at the second or third level, so a very short brandable name is out before you begin.
- Latin letters, digits and hyphens only
- A name cannot begin or end with a hyphen, and names carrying hyphens in the third and fourth positions are rejected. NIXI does not accept internationalised names in Hindi, Tamil or any other script until it announces otherwise.
- Your details appear in the public WHOIS
- NIXI's standing policy is that registrant, administrative and technical contact data is displayed in the .IN WHOIS, with only the billing contact withheld. WHOIS privacy is free only on .uk extensions under Nominet's rules, so ask us before you order if this matters.
- Sixty days before a transfer
- A registrar to registrar transfer is not permitted in the sixty days following creation of the name. A completed transfer adds one year to the term.
- The registry can refuse or suspend
- NIXI reserves the authority to deny or suspend any registration that conflicts with the sovereign national interest or public order, and the government maintains a separate list of reserved names.
Rules taken from the NIXI .IN registration policies. Registry policy can change, so check before you buy if the answer matters to you.
Not sure whether you qualify? Ask us before you order and we will check the registry rules with you. We would rather answer the question than take an order the registry will refuse.
Is .firm.in the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.firm.in works well if
- You are a partnership, practice or consultancy selling in India, and firm describes the business more accurately than co ever did.
- The .in and co.in versions of your name went long ago, and firm.in gives the exact word back rather than a hyphenated approximation.
- You are covering the Indian variants around a name you already own, and want the business-facing label in the set.
Look elsewhere if
- You need a very short address. NIXI enforces a three character floor, so the punchy two letter name is not available anywhere in .in.
- You expect to save money. A plain .in costs less on this site than firm.in, so this is a naming decision rather than a budget one.
- Your privacy matters and you are registering as a person. NIXI publishes registrant contact data in the .in WHOIS, and privacy here is a paid extra.
The word still free under .in? Take that. It is shorter, cheaper here and every Indian visitor recognises it instantly. See .in pricing.
.firm.in vs .in: which should you register?
Both are NIXI, both are unrestricted, both carry India as a geographic signal in Google, and neither is verified. The difference is length, familiarity and price, and all three favour the plain .in. It is shorter to say, universally recognised in India, and costs less on this site than any of the third level zones despite the registry charging registrars less for those than for .in.
Pick .in when the name is free. Pick firm.in when it is not, and you would rather keep your exact brand word with a business-flavoured label attached than hyphenate or abbreviate it. It is a decent second choice, but it is a second choice, and pretending otherwise would not help you.
.firm.in domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .firm.in domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNo. NIXI lists firm.in among the zones where registration is available freely to all parties worldwide, with no nexus or other qualifications. Nothing is checked about your legal form, so a sole trader, a limited company or an individual can hold one. The zones NIXI does restrict are ac.in, res.in, edu.in, gov.in and mil.in, each reserved for qualified organisations in India.
co.in is better known and that usually settles it. Both sit in the same unrestricted list under identical rules, both cost the same on this site, and neither is verified. The case for firm.in is availability: it is far less picked over, so the word you actually want is more likely to be free. If both are available, take co.in, because an address people recognise saves you an explanation every time you say it out loud.
No. NIXI sets a minimum of three characters for .IN names, at both the second and third level, and one and two character registrations are not available to the public. Names use Latin letters, digits and hyphens only, cannot start or end with a hyphen, and are rejected if they carry hyphens in the third and fourth positions. Internationalised names in Indian scripts are not being accepted either.
