Choosing between .finance and .financial, and why both exist
Two extensions cover the same ground, from the same registry, delegated within a week of each other in April 2014. .finance and .financial are both operated by Binky Moon for Identity Digital, both open to anyone, and both carry ICANN's Category 1 public interest commitments for regulated sectors. The meaningful differences come down to the shape of the word and a few pounds a year.
Finance is a noun and a category. Financial is an adjective looking for a noun to sit next to, which is why it pairs naturally with a firm name and finance pairs naturally with a topic. Property finance, fleet finance and invoice finance all read as complete phrases. Property financial does not. Write your candidate names out both ways and the answer is usually obvious in about a minute.
What neither extension buys you is standing. Nothing is verified at registration. The Category 1 clauses work through your registrar's agreement: you undertake to comply with applicable laws on privacy, consumer protection, fair lending and financial disclosures, and to apply reasonable security to sensitive financial data. Separately, the FCA holds that all financial promotions must be clear, fair and not misleading regardless of the media type, and treats a website as media like any other. The domain is neither a shield nor a credential.
Where we would use it: a product brand, an advisory practice whose name says nothing on its own, or a specialist arm that needs its own address. Where we would not: as the sole address of a UK firm whose enquiries come from local search, because a .co.uk does that job better for about a fifth of the annual cost.
Is .finance the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.finance works well if
- Your firm name is a surname or an invented word, and the extension supplies the sector that the name leaves entirely unsaid.
- You want a topic-led address where the word in front of the dot is the market itself: property, fleet, invoice, asset.
- You sell across borders, so a UK extension would misdescribe where you actually operate and who you can take on.
- You are separating a regulated arm from a wider group and want its address to read as clearly its own rather than a subfolder.
Look elsewhere if
- Most of your enquiries come from UK search. A .co.uk carries a geographic signal that no generic extension does, at about a fifth of the annual cost.
- You expect the extension to imply authorisation. It implies nothing, and the Financial Services Register is where anyone serious will check you.
- You will read the address out to clients constantly. Finance and financial are a syllable apart, and whichever you buy some people will type the other.
A UK adviser working mainly with UK clients? The .co.uk is cheaper and stronger for local search. See .co.uk pricing.
.finance vs .financial: which should you register?
Same registry, same rules, a few pounds apart, and a real risk of buying the wrong one. Grammar decides it.
.financial wants a name in front of it, because the word is an adjective waiting for a noun. A surname works. A topic does not. .finance takes a topic, because it is a noun in its own right, which is why invoice finance, fleet finance and property finance all read as finished phrases while their financial equivalents read as fragments.
If both fit your name, buy both and redirect one. They are close enough that a caller mishearing your address can land somewhere else entirely, and holding the pair for a few pounds more is cheaper than living with that confusion.

.finance domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .finance domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyChoose on grammar rather than on price, because the two are almost identical commercially. Financial is an adjective and wants a name in front of it, so it suits a firm named after people. Finance is a noun and takes a topic, so it suits invoice finance, fleet finance or property finance. Both are Identity Digital extensions delegated within a week of each other in April 2014 and carry the same obligations. If both read well, register the pair and redirect one.
No. Registration is open, nothing is verified and the registry's agreement stops it refusing you on identity grounds. What that agreement does require is that you undertake, through your registrar, to comply with applicable laws on privacy, consumer protection, fair lending and financial disclosures. Whether you need authorisation depends on what you do, not on your address. The FCA also expects every financial promotion to be clear, fair and not misleading in any medium, and that includes your website.
It is neutral, which for a UK-focused firm is a small loss. Google's documentation states that unless ICANN lists an extension as a country code, it treats any top-level domain resolving through the root zone as generic, so .finance carries no geographic signal at all. A .co.uk does, and that helps in Google UK results. Keywords in an extension are not a ranking factor either, so buy .finance for what it communicates to people, not for what it says to a crawler.
Roughly five times a .co.uk, every year, and that is the number worth planning around. Financial firms hold their domains for a very long time, so a decision that looks small on the first invoice compounds quietly. Identity Digital also maintains a reserved list including premium names that it can revise, so short or obvious names can sit above the standard rate. Check the price shown on this page, and set the domain to auto-renew with a monitored mailbox on the contact record.
