What NASK checks before it registers a .com.pl
Poland's registry, NASK, runs a long shelf of what it calls functional domains sitting beside the plain .pl: com.pl, biz.pl, sklep.pl for shops, szkola.pl for schools, turystyka.pl for tourism, and about thirty more. com.pl is the busiest of them, and it is the one a Polish visitor reads as a company address rather than a personal one.
What is worth knowing is how little sits behind that reading. The .pl Domain Name Regulations set no eligibility test of any kind. A subscriber is simply a party to the agreement with NASK, and the regulations state that NASK does not examine whether entering into or performing that agreement infringes anyone else's rights. Only gov.pl is fenced off, with its own separate regulations, its own application form and its own technical conditions. So .com.pl signals commerce by convention, not by verification.
What NASK does police is the label itself: a 63 character limit, hyphen rules, and a short list of protocol words that nobody may register. Useful, but none of it is about you.
Who is allowed to register .com.pl?
Anyone anywhere can hold a .com.pl. The rules that actually bite are about the name you choose, not about who you are.
- No eligibility test
- The .pl Domain Name Regulations contain no residency, nationality or company requirement, and nothing verifies that a com.pl holder trades commercially. NASK states that it does not examine whether a registrant is infringing a third party's rights.
- Reserved protocol words
- Names reserved for internet services cannot be registered in the .pl zone at all: ldap, mailto, news, sip, tel, www, ftp, http and https. If your brand word is one of those, the answer is no before you start.
- Hyphen and length rules
- A name runs to 63 characters excluding the extension. A hyphen cannot open or close a name, and cannot sit in the third and fourth positions at the same time unless the name is an internationalised one beginning xn--.
- If someone challenges the name
- NASK does not decide who had the better right to a word. A challenge goes to one of the arbitration courts it works with, and the regulations are explicit that accepting a registration is not NASK agreeing you were entitled to it.

- The .pl you wanted has gone and you would rather keep your exact brand word than pad it out with an extra syllable.
- You run a separate site per market and want Poland to look Polish in Google, which a .pl address does and a .com does not.
Look elsewhere if
- You assumed .com.pl was the cheap fallback. Compare it against the plain .pl on this site first, because the shorter name is not the dearer one.
- Your customers are British. A Polish extension aims your geographic signal at Poland, and a .co.uk costs a fraction of it.
- You want the com label to prove something. NASK verifies nothing about it, so it carries convention rather than credential.

.com.pl vs .pl: which should you register?
These two are the same registry, the same rules and the same country signal in Google. The only real difference is the word com in the middle and what a Polish reader takes from it. A plain .pl is shorter, is what Polish businesses reach for first, and is what somebody will type if they half remember your address.
Take the .pl whenever it is available for your name. Take the .com.pl when the .pl has gone and you would rather keep the exact word than invent a variation of it. Do not choose it on price: check both figures on this site, because the extra label does not buy you a discount.

Ask us directlyNo. NASK sets no residency, nationality or company requirement, and its registration regulations contain no eligibility clause at all. A UK business can register one directly through any NASK partner. The only Polish requirement worth planning around is practical rather than legal: your site and your support need to work for Polish customers, because the address promises them that it will.
Neither has an edge. Both are part of Poland's country code namespace, so Google reads both as a site intended for Poland, and there is no ranking difference between the two labels. Choose on how the name reads and what is available. The one thing to avoid is assuming a generic .com will do the same job in Polish results, because it carries no country signal at all.
Most refusals are naming problems rather than eligibility ones. Protocol words such as www, ftp, http and mailto cannot be registered anywhere in the .pl zone, a hyphen cannot open or close a name, and a hyphen cannot sit in the third and fourth positions unless the name is internationalised. Beyond that, NASK does not check whether you had the right to the word, so a trademark challenge is settled in arbitration afterwards rather than blocked at the point of sale.
