What is Typo3?
TYPO3 is an open-source PHP enterprise content management system first released in 1998. It is licensed under the GPL and maintained by the TYPO3 Association along with a large global community, with particularly strong adoption in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the wider DACH region. The current major versions are TYPO3 v12 and v13.
The platform runs on PHP 8.2 or later and MySQL 8 / MariaDB 10.4+ or PostgreSQL. Composer is required for dependency management. TYPO3 is built on a custom framework that predates Symfony, though current versions integrate Symfony components. Core features include extensive structured content modelling via the TYPO3 backend, granular access control through user groups and permissions, multi-language and multi-site support out of the box, integrated workspace and review workflows, and a large extension marketplace.
TYPO3 is taken seriously by enterprise clients across Europe, including manufacturers, universities, public-sector organisations, and large editorial publishers. The 365i application catalogue includes TYPO3 with a managed cloud server tier as the recommended hosting profile from £9.99/mo upward.
365i’s editorial review of Typo3
TYPO3 is the enterprise CMS most British developers haven't heard of and most German developers swear by. It's been around since 1998, predates WordPress and Drupal both, and has been the default enterprise CMS choice in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) for over two decades. UK adoption is smaller but real, mostly through European-headquartered enterprises, manufacturers with European operations, and universities with German-speaking partners.
I host TYPO3 for a couple of UK clients with European parent companies, where TYPO3 is the group standard and the UK site has to fit into the same content infrastructure. The pattern is invariably the same: enterprise client, multi-language requirements, structured content modelling that goes well beyond posts and pages, granular editorial workflow, and an in-house development team comfortable with TYPO3's particular conventions.
What works well: the structured content modelling is genuinely sophisticated. TYPO3's content elements, with their type-driven rendering and configurable backends, give editorial teams a level of control over what can go on a page that few other CMSs match. Multi-language is excellent and built around the assumption that you have several languages, not bolted on later. Workspaces, the editorial preview-and-review workflow, are a serious feature. Permissions are extremely granular.
"TYPO3 is the right answer when an enterprise needs structured editorial across multiple languages with proper review workflow and the budget for a real build. It's overkill for a small business site, and that's fine, it isn't aimed at small businesses."
Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting
What's annoying: the learning curve. TYPO3 has its own conventions, its own terminology (TypoScript, TCA, FlexForms, you'll learn them all), and a culture of doing things the TYPO3 way. None of that is wrong, but it means a developer coming from WordPress or Drupal needs months not weeks to be productive. Documentation is thorough but often dense. The extension marketplace is large but quality varies and you'll need to evaluate carefully.
Hosting profile: TYPO3 wants real infrastructure. PHP 8.2+, Composer, MySQL 8 with a reasonable buffer pool, OPcache, ideally Redis or Memcached, plenty of memory (we'd suggest 1GB minimum for the PHP process on a serious site), and Composer-based deployment from a Git repository. Our managed cloud servers from £9.99/mo are the entry point; production TYPO3 sites typically sit on our higher-tier cloud plans because the editorial workflow with multiple concurrent editors benefits from headroom.
For TYPO3 deployments we set up Composer in deploy hooks, configure OPcache aggressively, set Redis as the cache backend, separate database backups from filesystem backups (TYPO3's processed-file directory can be huge), and tune MySQL for the TYPO3 query patterns which are heavier than most CMSs. CDN with pre-caching helps with anonymous-user page load. Multi-language sites benefit particularly from CDN because language-variant pages cache independently.
If you're choosing TYPO3, you almost certainly already know why. It's not a casual choice. If you have an experienced TYPO3 developer or agency, and your project genuinely needs structured multi-language editorial workflow, it's an excellent platform. If you don't have TYPO3 experience in your team and you're not committed to learning it, look at Drupal or SilverStripe first; the talent pool in the UK is larger.

Where Typo3 Fits
Best for
Enterprise editorial sites needing structured content with multi-language and multi-site support, granular editorial workflow, and a development team experienced with TYPO3 conventions. Manufacturers and public-sector organisations with European operations, universities, and large editorial publishers. UK clients with European parent companies standardising on TYPO3.
Watch for
Steep learning curve and TYPO3-specific terminology (TypoScript, TCA, FlexForms). Smaller UK developer talent pool than Drupal or WordPress. Hosting requirements rule out budget shared hosting entirely. Build cost is higher than most alternatives. Not the right pick unless the project genuinely needs TYPO3's capabilities and the team has the experience to use them.

A Typo3 case from our books
A UK subsidiary of a German manufacturer joined us in 2024 with a TYPO3 v11 site that had been hosted on the parent company\'s German infrastructure. The UK marketing team needed faster UK page-load times for prospects and search-engine rankings, plus an independent UK hosting contract for budget-control reasons. The site held around 1,800 content elements across 320 pages, supported English and German, and ran around 67,000 visits a month from UK and Ireland visitors.
We provisioned one of our managed cloud servers at £24.99/mo, set PHP to 8.3, configured OPcache and Redis, set up Composer-based deployment from their existing Git repository, and configured separated backups. We also did the upgrade from TYPO3 v11 to v12 as part of the migration, since v11 was reaching end-of-active-support. CDN with pre-caching was configured for both English and German page variants.
End-to-end migration plus the version upgrade took us around 28 working hours over four weeks, with staged extension testing because the parent company\'s build used a couple of less-common extensions. UK page-load times improved by roughly 64%, with the latency change accounting for the bulk and OPcache plus Redis adding the rest. The UK marketing team also got their own admin login on a UK-hosted environment.
What we would tell anyone in the same spot: hosting TYPO3 in the same country as your audience matters more than for most CMSs because TYPO3 page renders are heavier than average. UK-hosted TYPO3 for a UK audience pays for itself in conversion.

What we look for in cms hosting
A content management system is a long-term tenant on your hosting, not a quick install. We tune for what CMSs actually do day to day: an opcache configured to survive plugin and theme upgrades, PHP memory at 256MB or higher because page builders chew through it, daily backups that include the uploads directory and not just the database, and free SSL enforced from day one. We also keep an honest opinion about which CMS suits which site and will tell you when something would run better elsewhere.

Beyond CMS, our one-click installer covers 79 open-source PHP applications across 27 categories. A small selection from across the catalogue:
Typo3 Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running Typo3 on our hosting.
TYPO3 v12 and v13 require PHP 8.2 or later, MySQL 8 / MariaDB 10.4+ or PostgreSQL 13+, and Composer. Recommended PHP memory is 512MB minimum (1GB+ for production). OPcache and either Redis or Memcached for cache and sessions are essential at scale. Our managed cloud servers from £9.99/mo include all of this with proper tuning. We don't recommend TYPO3 on shared hosting; the application will run but the editorial workflow and page-render performance need dedicated resources.
TYPO3 is in our application installer with a Composer-aware install path. For production deployments on managed cloud servers, we typically set up a Composer-based Git workflow from the start, because that's the documented best practice for TYPO3 production deployments. The one-click is fine for evaluation, demos, and very small TYPO3 sites. Either way, the installer creates the database and walks you through the install tool.
Yes, very well, that's what TYPO3 is built for. On a properly tuned cloud server with OPcache, Redis cache backend, page caching configured aggressively, and CDN front-loading, TYPO3 handles enterprise editorial sites doing several hundred thousand monthly visits comfortably. For larger scale, TYPO3 supports horizontal scaling, full-page CDN caching, and externalised cache backends. We've seen TYPO3 sites scale to genuinely large traffic on relatively modest cloud infrastructure when the caching layer is configured properly.
Hosting-layer support 7 days a week. PHP, MySQL or PostgreSQL, Composer, Redis, OPcache, file permissions, SSL, email, DNS, backups, migrations, deployment workflows, CDN, and platform-level performance tuning. We don't build TYPO3 extensions, write TypoScript, or perform major-version upgrades as part of standard hosting support, those are development tasks we'd quote separately or refer to our sister site 365iwebdesign.co.uk. The TYPO3 community is large, particularly in the DACH region, and the official documentation is thorough. Datacentre infrastructure is monitored 24/7.
Yes, free with our managed cloud server onboarding. Send us your existing host's SSH access, Git repository, and database details, plus the TYPO3 version and a list of installed extensions. We'll provision a UK cloud server, set up Composer-based deployment, restore the database and processed-file directory, configure caching, set up SSL and CDN, and test before DNS cutover. We can run the TYPO3 version upgrade if you want, with staged testing. Migrations typically take us between half a day and three days depending on extension count and content volume.
TYPO3 has an excellent security record. The TYPO3 Security Team publishes advisories on a clear schedule and the platform is taken seriously by enterprise and public-sector users across Europe. Our hosting adds free SSL, separated daily backups for code, database, and processed-file directory, file permission hardening, OPcache, and platform-level WAF rules. For enterprise clients, we'd also enable two-factor authentication on backend users (built into TYPO3), restrict the backend URL where practical, configure rate limiting on login, and set up audit logging via the TYPO3 system features.
